Whaley Children's Center

Whaley Children's Center Transforming Lives and Creating Futures for the kids at Whaley Children's Center since 1926.

At Whaley Children’s Center, our children come to us due to severe abuse and neglect. Through our program, we help our children build confidence and provide them a place to belong and call home. Our CARF-accredited Qualified Residential Treatment Facility, licensed with the State of Michigan, serves foster youth ages 5-17, and our Independent Living Plus program supports youth aging out of the fos

ter care system ages 16-21. With the dedication of our staff, donors, and volunteers, we empower our children to heal, grow, and thrive.

Our spaces have gone through many remodels throughout the years.

Our most recent focus on remodels has been tailoring our environments to be more trauma-informed. This change is shown through better sensory appeal, like softer coloring, furniture options, texture options, and quieter acoustics. All of these characteristics promote a calmer atmosphere, leading to our youth experiencing more safety and comfort in their spaces.

Whaley has and continues to adapt and grow with new information about mental health, preferences from our population, and improved safety.

Meet our first Difference Maker of the month!

Brandon Dorsey - Milieu Coordinator

"Brandon performs exceptionally well in his role as Milieu Coordinator, building strong, positive relationships with both youth and staff while helping to create an environment of trust, support, and teamwork. He consistently steps in during crisis situations with a calm, professional presence and maintains a positive attitude no matter how challenging the day may be."

It is no secret that our buildings, though renovated, are old. Among our staff, we have coined the term "Whaley Wiggle". This jokingly refers to the extra effort used in opening some older locks.

With an old building comes a lot of quirks, but the quirks we have remind us of the long history of support and commitment the staff shares.

From all of us at Whaley Children's Center, we would like to wish all dads a Happy Father's Day!

Today, we celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth.

"Juneteenth represents a historical turning point in the fight against racial discrimination and offers an opportunity to reflect on the resilience, strength, and cultural contributions of Black individuals." - Mindfulness Instructor, Marcia

In observance of Juneteenth, our administration building will be closed on June 19th.
