Whenever Flint Schools is the topic of conversation, we often can't escape the popular notion that Flint Schools were "the best back in the day."

We celebrate a past that we hardly ever confront truthfully and honestly. Flint School's "great" days were those where racial segregation was in full force. These were the days where black children and communities were denied human rights. These were the days where the federal mandate to desegregate the schools in 1975 led to further white disinvestment from the Flint Schools.

We should not be advocating for a return to a system that did not see the humanity of all people, we should instead search and mandate a new system in which our students are valued and protected.
