ABOUT PRESCRIBED FIRE
There are multiple benefits to prescribed fire, which is a safe, effective and efficient means of managing the buildup of forest fuels that may contribute to the start and spread of a wildfire. By actively eliminating sources of fuel that exacerbate forest fire risks through a prescribed fire program, the Forest Fire Service reduces risk to New Jersey residents, visitors and the environment.

Prescribed fire improves habitat for plants and animals, reduce the presence of damaging insects and ticks, and recycle nutrients into the soil. In addition, prescribed fire is an important part of the state’s carbon defense strategy. Allowing experts to choose the intensity, timing and interval of fire across the landscape may help prevent a larger uncontrolled wildfire, which would contribute to significant carbon loss. Typically, the implementation of most prescribed fire take place between February and early April.

A significant snow event is forecast for our area to expected to arrive this weekend. Snow totals are anticipated to be in the 12-18 inch range (expect the worst and hope for the best). We encourage all residents that have a fire hydrant in front of or adjacent to their properties to clear 3 feet all around and out to the curb. This enables the Flemington Volunteer Fire Department drivers to spot the hydrant and prevents delays in getting water for any fires that may occur. The minutes spent clearing a hydrant can create a critical delay in the fire departments response that may already be hampered by weather and road conditions.

Additionally in the event of a power outage be extra careful with portable heaters, Wood stoves, fire places and generators. Never operate a grill, generator or a outdoor propane heater in an enclosed space.

We recently had a little snow. If you have a Fire hydrant in front of or near your home or business, please clear an area 3 feet around the fire hydrant and all the way to the street. By doing this, you will save our firefighters valuable time in getting additional water in the event there is a fire. When our firefighters arrive to a fire every second counts, in modern homes with modern furnishings fires tend to double in size every 30-60 seconds. Having the fire hydrant clear can save the firefighters 3 minutes or more. Please help them so they can help you.

Smoke from wildfires is again in our area. It is a faint odor and not as bad as in the past. If you smell a strong odor of smoke and see smoke and it’s not from you or your neighbors NJFFS approved campfire, report it. Early detection of fires can save lives.

Why Do You Smell Smoke Today?

If you notice the smell of smoke in the air, don’t panic – it’s likely due to wildfire smoke drifting from Canada. Depending on weather conditions, the smoke can travel hundreds of miles and affect air quality in our area.

⚠️ Elevated Risk for the Spread of Wildfires - Wednesday, April 30

US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly and US National Weather Service New York NY have issued a Special Weather Statement for the elevated risk for the spread of wildfires in New Jersey today.

❗️SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT:
There is an elevated risk for fire spread through early this evening across most of New Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania. Minimum relative humidity values will drop to 15 and 30 percent. This will be accompanied by northwesterly winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. These conditions, along with the continued drying of fine fuels, could support the rapid spread of any fires that ignite, which could quickly become difficult to control. The winds will diminish later this evening and the relative humidity will also increase.
