Parents, please talk to your students about the app called PEEK. I’m sure some students are already using it and it is known as a tool used to cyberbully students and connecting with contacts who they say they are.
Advise students:
Do not click the link
Do not grant the app access to contacts or other personal information
Delete the message
If the app has already been installed or granted contacts access, remove it and review its permissions
Talk with students about not forwarding the message to others
The text reads: “Someone at [school name] sent you a compliment,” followed by a link. The link leads to an app called Peek: Secret Compliment, which lets users sign up with a school and grade level, then anonymously post, comment on and vote in polls about their peers.
“As you clicked on the link, it immediately grabbed any of the contact information that you had,” Perry said. “And then from there, it sent out a corresponding message to everybody in your contact list, and used you as a legitimate source of vetting.”
