In March 2026, a stolen vehicle was reported to the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office. At the time, the vehicle was in the possession of a mechanic who was later arrested on an unrelated matter, leaving the vehicle on the property. When the owner later returned to retrieve the vehicle, she discovered it had been taken without her permission.

Investigators conducted interviews with all individuals who had knowledge of the vehicle’s whereabouts. During the investigation, it was determined that the vehicle had been transported to South Georgia Metal in Irwin County and sold for scrap. Investigators contacted the business and were able to locate the vehicle, which was subsequently recovered and returned to its rightful owner.

Further investigation led to the recovery of documentation, including the receipt and check used in the transaction. Based on this evidence, warrants were obtained for the arrest of Markel Royal, a 20-year-old from Fitzgerald, Georgia.

On April 30, 2026, the suspect was taken into custody and charged with Felony Theft by Taking.
