Somewhere in there is a little one trying his best to survive. It has been a busy month. And we got just a little bit behind in some of our weekly chores. It sure would have been nice to have a big old circle of Roundup around each tree. That's the modern way. But a little time, effort, and sweat never hurt anyone did it? It's been almost a quarter of a century since we planted our very first seedling. And at least 15 years since we went chemical free in our approach. And now it has become a great habit. The only chemical we use now is good old sweat. And we hope you appreciate that in every drink you pour from our farm.

And don't worry, in the pic below you will see that the little guy was thriving underneath all of the grass. And now he can see the sunshine once again

2023 Seedlings in the ground! This year returning to the "crop of 1000" field. I don't know what makes that field so special, but it always yields some beautiful trees

Seedlings arrived a bit early this year. I don't plant in snow, and won't plant in mud. So...the trees are napping in a mound of topsoil. Anxiously awaiting there forever home.

Little guys got all snuggled in their beds today. Mulch should help keep a little extra moisture and keep the weeds at bay for a bit. Chemical free makes a better tasting gin!

All done, only thing left is mulching and prayers for some rainfall.

Coming Soon to a Bar near you!!

As many of you know, we started our little fir and spruce operation initially to have a bonding family enterprise. And sometimes that meant doing things the hard way. Hand planted seedlings. Landscape fabric, mulch, and mowing meant less dependence on chemicals and greater appreciation for the value of sweat equity. So many people allowed us and our trees into your homes every holiday season. (Foreshadowing moment: we can't say goodbye to that.) It truly touched us that all of you appreciated how we raised each little seedling. How we were "organic" before that was even a thing.
And now, it seems that our archaic methods are presenting yet another opportunity to share our blessings. This weekend we delivered our final round of harvest to Vitae Spirits and distilling has begun. Soon to be launched under the product name "Conifer." Made with the tender young tips of our mature trees. I've personally tasted the preliminary batches made last winter. If you're a gin drinker, you're going to love this product.!
In a world where it seems that the answer to every agricultural product is "chemical this, and chemical that" our little enterprise stood in contrast. So when Vitae needed the "good stuff" we were in a unique position. Seedlings are like children. There are few problems that can't be solved with a little time, love, and sunshine.

Of course we know that no other tree farm plants their seedlings with a hand dug hole and 5 gallons of topsoil. But being a chemical free farm gives us that extra special sense of a having a job done well. Doing it this way yields a 95% seedling survival rate. Almost twice the national average! Sweat=love.
