As we head into Labor Day weekend, the Indiana Township Association extends our sincere appreciation to the hardworking Americans both past and present who help build, maintain, and strengthen our communities.

A special thank you to Indiana’s Township Trustees and staff who serve their communities year-round, often quietly and behind the scenes. The ITA sees you, appreciates you, and thanks you for all that you do!

We also extend our sincere thanks to our ITA staff for working hard on behalf of our members every day.

In observance of Labor Day, the ITA office will be closed Monday, September 7, and will resume normal operations on Tuesday.

Across Indiana, township government is there when people need help the most.

In this episode of the Indiana Township Association’s “Townships… Always There” video series, we travel to Center Township in Delaware County to spotlight Lone Pine Lodge, an innovative family shelter created to help families experiencing homelessness remain together while working toward stability and self-sufficiency.

Center Township Trustee Kay Walker and her team recognized a critical gap in their community: families in crisis often struggled to find emergency shelter where parents and children could stay together. Instead of simply accepting the problem, Center Township took action.

The result is Lone Pine Lodge — a facility designed not only to provide families with a safe place to stay, but also to connect them with resources, employment opportunities, benefits, permanent housing and a path forward.

This is township government at its best: identifying a local need, finding a local solution and helping neighbors when they need it most.

Throughout Indiana, townships provide essential services that strengthen people, families and communities. The “Townships… Always There” series tells those stories.

🚨 SNAP RECIPIENTS: YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR REPLACEMENT BENEFITS AFTER A POWER OUTAGE

If you receive SNAP benefits and your power was out for at least 4 hours, you may be eligible to receive replacement SNAP benefits for food that was lost due to the outage.

According to Indiana FSSA policy, the power outage must be verified, and for an outage-related claim, NIPSCO may need to confirm that your address experienced an outage lasting at least 4 hours.

📌 Important: You must report the food loss to your local Division of Family Resources (DFR) office within 10 days of the loss and complete the Affidavit for Replacement of SNAP Benefits (State Form 40988). (Indiana Forms⁠)

The amount you may receive depends on the amount of eligible food lost and your SNAP benefits. Only food lost because of the outage such as refrigerated or frozen food is considered for a power-outage replacement. (Indiana Forms⁠)

🚨Calumet Township Storm Relief Initiative

The Office of the Calumet Township Trustee has coordinated a response that addresses both immediate needs and the recovery ahead.

Beginning Sunday and continuing throughout the week, we will activate additional relief efforts for Calumet Township residents impacted by the storm as noted below.

Calumet Township offices have also been significantly impacted by this week’s storm. Our facilities have experienced extensive flooding, storm damage and power outages, which have affected our normal operations.

With that said our team remains at work. Services will be handled manually as necessary.

Residents seeking direct Township Assistance must complete an application. Assistance will be determined on a case-by-case basis in accordance with eligibility requirements, Indiana law, and Calumet Township’s adopted standards.

We have established contact with the American Red Cross and Lake County Emergency Management and are continuing to connect with other partners to identify additional resources and support for our residents.

As additional support is made available information efforts will be shared through our official channels.

This is 113th and Southeastern Pkwy. In 40 years I have never seen water cross this road like this.
I have reached out to Luxhaven residents, the Mayor, Hamilton County Emergency Management and Commissioner Heirbrandt. HCEM says they believe the water will crest sometime tomorrow. It could still rise another foot from where it was this afternoon. This could impact Luxhaven residents. Although many of them have dealt with high water before, this could potentially be greater than what they have experienced in the past. I pray that is not the case. Fishers Fire and Rescue is monitoring this and are ready to respond if needed. Luxhaven residents should call 911 if they need help. The County is also prepared to help as well should residents need to be evacuated. Many of you have my cell number and you know you can always call me if I can be of assistance with shelter, food or any other need.

How can we help our neighbors as they work through flooded homes and businesses? Deliver highly sought after items to the drop off points. We will have collection boxes at Vernon Township in our main entrance at 602 Vitality Drive.
