In December 1927, eight years after Madam C.J. Walker's death, her company finished a four story Art Deco building on Indiana Avenue that would become the beating heart of Black culture in Indianapolis for most of the twentieth century. 💫

Walker had built one of the first great hair care and cosmetics companies in the country, and after her passing, her general manager Freeman B. Ransom and her daughter A'Lelia Walker carried her vision through to completion. The building held a 1,500 seat theater with interior details drawing on Egyptian, Moorish, and West African design, along with a pharmacy, a beauty school, and a ballroom, all designed by the Indianapolis firm Rubush and Hunter. Over the decades, its stage hosted performers like Dinah Washington, Freddie Hubbard, and Smokey Robinson.

The building nearly faced demolition before a community effort saved it, and it reopened in 1988 as the Madam Walker Legacy Center. A recent 15.3 million dollar renovation modernized the space while keeping its historic character intact, and today it still runs arts and cultural programming in partnership with IUPUI.

What does it mean to you that a building built on a Black woman's business legacy is still standing, still active, almost a hundred years later?
