Many people assume Pierce County Fire District 10 is funded by Pierce County. It isn’t.

PCFD10 is an independent fire district serving Fife and nearby unincorporated areas like Fife Heights. Emergency services here are funded primarily through local voter-approved property taxes — not county general funds.

The district contracts with Tacoma Fire to provide emergency response in the community, and under that agreement, PCFD10 is responsible for providing and maintaining the aging fire station used by Tacoma crews.

This August, voters will consider a bond measure to fund land purchase and construction of a replacement fire station.

Leaves and pine needles often collect in gutters and on roofs—places where embers can easily start a fire. Take time this spring to:

• Clean gutters and downspouts
• Remove debris from your roof
• Check for buildup in roof corners and valleys

Keeping these areas clear can help reduce ignition risk. More info: wildfireprepday.org

Wildfire preparedness isn’t just for rural areas—there are steps residents can take anywhere to reduce risk. Take a look at what safety experts call the Home Ignition Zone, the area where vegetation and combustible materials can influence whether a structure ignites during a wildfire.

Consider:
• Removing leaves and pine needles near the foundation
• Trimming trees so branches don’t touch structures
• Keeping flammable materials away from buildings

Our Board of Fire Commissioners has begun discussing the future of the fire station in Fife. The current facility, built in 1955, was not designed for modern fire apparatus or today’s firefighter health and safety standards, and district leaders are considering options for a replacement.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and attend upcoming board meetings as the discussion continues.
