Last night, our department conducted a large-scale wildland fire training exercise led by FF K. Tinker and FF D. Tinker using an area we have not previously trained in. The scenario simulated a fast-moving wildland fire traveling south from the Mirror Lake area toward Spring Lake Campground.
To make the training as realistic as possible, Grand Traverse Central assisted by dispatching crews as if it were a real emergency. Chief S. Tinker coordinated Central operations, adding simulated mutual aid departments, DNR crews creating firebreak plow lines, aircraft working overhead, and law enforcement evacuating the campground.
LT Wellman served as Incident Command throughout the exercise, coordinating crews, assigning operations, tracking resources, and managing the overall flow of the incident as conditions changed. This gave members valuable experience working within a structured command system similar to what would be used during a real wildland fire response.
Throughout the exercise, firefighters practiced radio communications in areas where signal coverage was weak or unavailable and learned how to adapt in challenging conditions. Crews also trained on apparatus setup, pump operations, establishing water supply connections, scene size-ups, and working efficiently in rotating small teams.
A major focus of the training was firefighter accountability and crew safety. Teams used regular PAR (Personnel Accountability Report) checks along with our accountability tag system so Incident Command could always track where crews and apparatus were operating and what assignments they were handling.
Many members have previously worked only certain assignments during incidents or training exercises, so rotating crews through different operations gave everyone the opportunity to gain experience in multiple roles, refresh skills, and learn something new.
It was a great night of realistic training, and we look forward to getting more crews out in the field!
