Today we recognize and celebrate the service of retiring firefighter Ray Chartier.

Ray began his career in 1982 as a charter member of the Beaver Township Fire Department in Bay County, Michigan. In 1985, Ray and his family moved to West Michigan, where he continued his fire service career with Norton Shores Fire Department and Fruitport Fire Department.

In 2018, Ray joined our department in order to serve with his son (former Assistant Chief Ben Chartier) and grandsons (Lieutenant Tucker Chartier and former Lieutenant Steven Chartier). The knowledge, experience, and mentorship he brought to our members has been invaluable.

After 44 years of dedicated service, Ray now closes this chapter of his life. On behalf of a grateful department, we thank you for your commitment, your leadership, and the lasting impact you’ve had on all of us.

Congratulations on your retirement and don’t be a stranger!

Last night, Ferrysburg firefighters were requested as automatic mutual aid to Spring Lake Fire Department for a reported commercial structure fire. Initial arriving units reported a working fire with flames through the roof and the incident was quickly upgraded to a third alarm.

Ferrysburg responded with Engine 741 and 6 members. Once on scene, 741 was positioned for roof access and assisted with initial fire suppression. Throughout the incident, our members participated in roof operations and ventilating the structure. Engine 721 later responded to the scene to provide an air resource.

Crews remained on scene for more than 6 hours before returning to the City and placing the equipment back in service after 4:30 AM.

This scene was a challenging incident for all crews due to building size and fire involvement. It stands as a strong example of teamwork and coordinated response throughout the Northwest Ottawa community.

Last night, we were fortunate to host Paramedic Daniels from Life EMS for an in house orientation. With Life EMS recently taking over ambulance services in our area, this training focused on building familiarity with their equipment and strengthening coordination between our crews.

Opportunities like this ensure we continue to deliver the highest quality patient care to the community we are proud to serve.

Monday night, Ferrysburg firefighters completed monthly training with a focus on aerial operations using 741. Emphasis was placed on unit placement for maximum aerial efficiency, sharpening abilities on the controls, as well as roof access from the aerial device.

A night of positive discussions and skills refinement, our members are always prepared to fly the stick!

At 11:26 AM, Ferrysburg Fire Department was requested as automatic mutual aid to Grand Haven Department of Public Safety for a reported commercial structure fire. First arriving units reported heavy fire conditions and ordered defensive operations.

Engine 741 responded with a crew of six members while two additional members staffed the station for call coverage in our City. Our personnel assisted with the evacuation of a nearby business and supported suppression efforts with handlines and our aerial master stream. The crew remained on scene for just over two hours.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the business owners and employees affected as they have assisted us on many scenes in the past. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Saturday was a busy Valentine’s Day for our members.

At just after 10:00 AM, Ferrysburg Fire Department firefighters were requested to assist Fruitport Fire Department on a reported residential structure fire involving multiple structures. Engine 741 responded with a crew of four, providing manpower on scene before clearing and returning to Fruitport Station #1 for station coverage.

Just before 5:30 PM, FFD responded to an outside fire that was upgraded to a structure assignment with Spring Lake Fire Department. Engine 741 responded with three personnel and operated an aerial master stream during defensive fire operations. Crews remained on scene for approximately four and a half hours and returned to service shortly after 11:00 PM.

Throughout the day, Probationary Firefighters Ericksen and Paquin also participated in ice rescue training instructed by members of SLFD.

Thank you to all of our members for their dedication and for spending time away from their loved ones to serve the community this Valentine’s Day.
