..RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM PDT THIS EVENING FOR GUSTY WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITY FOR PORTIONS OF THE EASTERN SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA...

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect until 8 PM PDT this evening.

* Affected Area...Fire Weather Zone 274 Southern Mono County, Fire Weather Zone 421 Southern Sierra Front including Alpine, Northern Mono, Southern Lyon, and Western Mineral Counties, Fire Weather Zone 429 Lahontan Basin including Churchill and Eastern Mineral Counties.

* Winds...Southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

* Humidity...As low as 8 percent.

* Duration...4 to 6 hours.

* Impacts...The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.

Our firefighters are trained to handle all kinds of emergencies, and overnight, that included helping one very unlucky little critter! This time, the emergency was at the fire station.

The crew at Station 61 assisted after a ground squirrel managed to get itself stuck while attempting to squeeze through a hole in a precast concrete valve vault lid. The squirrel had made it about halfway through before discovering that getting out was going to be considerably more difficult than getting in.

Firefighters carefully worked to free the squirrel without causing further injury. After a little patience, some creative problem-solving, and a successful extrication, our furry patient was freed from the concrete lid.

The squirrel was assessed for injuries by firefighters and our partners at Battle Born Medevac before ultimately refusing treatment. It was then transported off-site to a safe location and released back into the wild.

Just another reminder that you never quite know what the next call will bring!

At approximately 5:37 p.m. this evening, North Lyon Fire was dispatched to a reported structure fire at an apartment complex on Lois Lane in Fernley. Initial reports indicated an apartment was on fire, no one was believed to be home, and pets were reportedly still inside.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a working fire on the second floor of a 10-unit apartment complex. Due to the potential for the fire to extend to adjoining residences, additional resources were requested and occupants of the affected portion of the complex were evacuated.

North Lyon firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive fire attack and conducted a primary search of the affected residence. The primary search was all clear, and crews had the fire knocked down within minutes of arrival. Firefighters then transitioned to overhaul operations, checking for fire extension into surrounding apartments.

Resources from Central Lyon Fire Protection District and Storey County Fire Protection District were initially requested but were able to cancel their response after North Lyon crews brought the incident under control.

We would also like to recognize the neighbors who helped with fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived. We greatly appreciate people looking out for their neighbors.

Three residents and 3 animals were displaced as a result of the fire. There were no injuries to responders. One citizen was assessed on scene for smoke inhalation but later refused treatment.

Great work by our North Lyon Fire crews on a quick knockdown that helped limit the spread of the fire within this multi-family residential complex.

This morning just before 7:15 a.m., North Lyon Fire was dispatched to a report of a head-on traffic collision on Farm District Road near the intersection with Jasmine Lane.

Responding units arrived to find 2 vehicles with major damage and airbag deployment partially blocking the westbound lane on Farm District.

All parties involved in the collision refused medical treatment at the scene. The scene then was turned over to Nevada State Police for their investigation.

Please remember to pay attention to the road while driving, eliminate distractions, maintain a safe speed, and always wear your seatbelts.

At approximately 8:46 p.m. last night, North Lyon Fire was dispatched to a motor vehicle collision on State Route 427 between Fernley and Wadsworth near the Lyon/Washoe County Line.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a heavily damaged vehicle with two patients. One patient had been ejected from the vehicle and was being tended to by Lyon County Sheriffs Office personnel, while a second patient was trapped inside and required extrication.

Firefighters immediately began patient care on both patients and worked to remove the trapped occupant using hydraulic rescue equipment.

Due to the severity of the incident, an air ambulance was requested directly to the scene. Battle Born Medevac subsequently transported one patient to a Reno hospital and another patient was transported by Pyramid Lake Fire Rescue.

The scene was later turned over to law enforcement for their investigation. We appreciate the assistance of Pyramid Lake Fire Rescue EMS, Battle Born Medevac, Nevada State Police, and the Lyon County Sheriffs Office in the response.

Incidents like this require close coordination between firefighting/EMS personnel, air medical crews, and law enforcement. We are grateful for the teamwork demonstrated throughout this response.

At approximately 11:37 a.m. today, North Lyon Fire was dispatched to a reported single-vehicle rollover in the area of Walnut Drive south of Fernley.

Arriving crews located a vehicle that had left the roadway and come to rest on its side in a retention pond. Due to the initial report that the driver remained inside the vehicle, additional resources responded and an air medical helicopter was placed on standby.

Fortunately, the driver was able to safely exit the vehicle with assistance with North Lyon Fire and Lyon County Sheriff’s personnel and the air medical response was canceled. North Lyon Fire paramedics evaluated the patient at the scene.

The driver refused medical treatment and the scene was turned over to Lyon County Sheriffs Office.

Again, we appreciate our law enforcement partners who are always willing to lend a hand when we need assistance.
