Yesterday’s dust storms across Minnesota were a powerful reminder of how vulnerable our soil can be during dry and windy conditions. When topsoil leaves our fields, we lose valuable nutrients, organic matter, and long-term productivity.

Conservation practices can make a big difference in protecting our land and water resources. Practices such as:

🌱 Cover crops
🌳 Tree plantings and shelterbelts
🚜 Reduced tillage or no-till practices
🌾 Maintaining crop residue

all help keep soil in place, reduce erosion, improve soil health, and lessen the impacts of strong winds.

The West Otter Tail SWCD works with local landowners and producers to implement conservation practices that build healthier, more resilient soils for the future.

If you’re interested in learning more about available conservation programs or technical assistance, contact our office today.
