This is the Santa Cruz County, California USA Amateur Radio Emergency Service. We do not discuss politics or religion here.

A large group of ham radio operators volunteering their time and equipment in the time of need. The Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes. We also support our communities by running communications at events when cell phones are not the solution, or when radio is the most efficient. This page is for the exchange of ideas and information related to ARES, ham radio equipment and setup, communications techniques, and radio etiquette. We also post events we are going to be at, meetings, and radio nets. You are invited to join in any time with your ideas and opinions about ham radio. I am the facilitator for this page (it is not my page, it is ours), and it takes all of us to make the group. Hope you will post what you are doing and the projects you are working on as well as post ARES events you attend.

It's third Wednesday, so Santa Cruz County ARES is having its in-person membership meeting tonight at the Emergency Operations Center on Soquel Avenue. Come on down and get in the door before 7:00 pm for a cool workshop pairing cables with Anderson Powerpole connectors, and learn some nifty tricks from our experienced Elmers. Bring your radio go-kit too, and share any cool stuff you've collected to enhance your deployment experience. Let's have some do-it-yourself fun!

I hope you all had a good labor day weekend and a fun POTA down at Twin Lakes State Beach. Weather was relatively cool thanks to monsoonal conditions. But now that fall is right around the corner, we're getting a heat wave right on cue. That's all right. We'll wear shorts and light tee shirts while we take part in tonight's Santa Cruz County ARES net. Just turn on the porch light when you go out on the deck, as twilight comes earlier and a long net may end up in the dark. Jim, KN6NCG, will be guiding check-ins on K6BJ 2m repeater, followed by news, announcements, maybe a report or two, before doing a net exercise.

What better way to kick off National Preparedness month than to take part in our Santa Cruz County ARES net? Tonight we will be checking in on K6BJ repeater at 1930 hours while Roberta, AJ6KN, shows us how an expert handles net control. We will hear news & announcements, then do a simplex rendezvous on Coastal 1 (freq 146.535 tone 94.8 Hz) Channel 16 on pre-programmed radios.

(Update) Latest news from Roberta, AJ6KN, is that Jeff, KN6PAA has stepped in at the last minute to take tonight's net on WR6AOK repeater. He will take check-ins only and ask for news and announcements. No exercise.

Though it is third Wednesday, there will be no meeting today. In Europe we'd call it a bank holiday. Here, just midsummer get-out-of-town vacation plans for many of our members. But we WILL have a net tonight for the folks who've stuck around. Jeff, KN6PAA, will take our check-ins on the WR6AOK repeater. We'll follow that with the usual news, announcements, and net exercise.

Solar storms, eclipses, and meteor showers, oh my! So many celestial events on this day, yet the most exciting thing happening in our neck of the woods will be the Santa Cruz County ARES weekly net. (Cloudy skies, I'm afraid; even the Perseids will pass us by.) So let's make our own excitement by having a big turnout. We'll check in on the WR6AOK repeater at 1930 hours with Bruce, KN6DBR, as net control.

We've come to the last Wednesday of July, and tonight's Santa Cruz County ARES net will happen right on schedule. The day is long and the weather's fine, so if you have an HT or mobile rig this would be a good time to take a spin and test propagation in a new place. Please check in at 1930 hours on K6BJ repeater. Allen, WB6AQP will be our net control operator and he will be working from County EOC in the center of town.

Guess what? Another week has passed and it's time again for the Santa Cruz County ARES net. Roberta, AJ6KN, will be net control operator. She'll start check-ins on K6BJ 2M repeater at 1930 hours, followed by news and announcements. Then we'll hop over to simplex on Coastal 1 (channel 16, CSTL1), freq. 147.57. This exercise will assess coverage and help us practice relay skills, so the more participants there are, the better.

It's third Wednesday, and summer is well and truly here. So instead of being cooped up in the usual windowless meeting room, Santa Cruz County ARES will have its annual Potluck gathering in the glorious afternoon sunshine. We will meet today from 6 to 8 pm at Scotts Valley Skypark, 361 Kings Village Road. Park in the lot near the gazebo. Bring something for yourself and for sharing. Plates, napkins and cutlery will be provided.
