In 2024 the Banana Slug was established as California’s official state slug! 💯🐌💛

The banana slug plays an integral role in our ecosystems – particularly the redwood forests, as their diet includes plants that compete with redwood seedlings for light, water, and nutrients.

After the rain is a perfect time to look for banana slugs as they emerge to feast, move, and thrive!

Who better to lead you through the Santa Cruz Mountains than the California State Parks Backpacking Adventures team?

This program is truly unique, the only such program led by California State Park staff, who not only help with the technical side but share with you the natural and cultural history of the area.

Each trip provides two such naturalists and you can meet them before hand at one of our in-person or video-conference pre-trip meetings. Adventure is a given, and native plant teas, trail desserts, skill demonstrations, stories, and jokes are added bonuses!

Registration opens January 1st at 9:00am on Squarespace, visit www.parks.ca.gov/backpacking for more information.

The Red Edge Brittlestem mushroom is not one that is recommended for consumption, despite being technically non-toxic.

It is considered inedible because it lacks flavor and culinary value, and is described as having a poor texture and thin flesh.

However, when exploring the magic of the forest, everything and all aspects, have value and contribute to the biodiversity… especially here at Henry Cowell.

The Red Edge Brittlestem grows in clusters in wooded areas, on decaying wood, rich soil, leaf litter, and in mulched paths… especially after rain.

From late fall to early winter, you can find them all along the paths and forest trails at Henry Cowell! Remember to step with care, and leave everything where you find it.
