I am with The Virtual Wall and looking for information about two, possibly 3 deaths from a munitions fire at either Camp Holloway or possibly Pleiku AIR BASE

The two killed for sure from that explosion were https://www.virtualwall.org/dh/HardyJE01a.htm and https://www.virtualwall.org/dd/DuncanPA01a.htm on Nov 24th in Pleiku from nonhostile munitions accident.

https://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/14190/PHILLIP-A-DUNCAN/ no article found at his page on VVMF.

Both were from 52ND SEC DET, 52ND AVN BN, 17TH AVN GROUP, 1ST AVIATION BDE, USARV

Probable that a third man, Daugherty was hurt then on 11-24 which is my guess, but can’t find anything to prove it.

He was https://www.virtualwall.org/dd/DuncanPA01a.htm

He was recommended for a Soldiers Medal for heroism in a non combat death. He died on November 26th so I am trying to find out if he saved people on the 24th and was injured on that day and died two days later.

If you could post the question on your page for anyone who might have been serving at Holloway then or otherwise recalls the incident.

Thanks

May 24, 2022 was my last day as VFW POST 1741 Commander. Over my time as Commander, our Post did some amazing work in our community.

Our efforts led to our Post being honored as the No. 1 Post in Washington and the No. 27 Post in the United States. Being Commander of VFW POST 1741 taught me several things. The one issue that is always present is the fact that veterans are the backbone of their community. The VFW nationally is the glue that keeps us united in the mission set before us.

I would like to thank the veterans who served alongside me in our leadership team for their dedication to getting the job!!

From a friend regarding the attack on the 57th AHC in Kontum:

53 Years ago - Remember:

Kontum Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Kontum
57 AHC losses were 6 KIA, 17 WIA
Aircraft lost in 57 AHC were 2 UH-1H, 2 UH-1C
Description: The 52d CAB unit history states that the 57th AHC and Kontum Airfield came under heavy enemy attack at approximately 0200H. The NVA used mortars, B-40 rockets, satchel charges and heavy small arms fires. The contact lasted approximately 7 - 8 minutes, resulting in: six US KIA, 20 WIA, two UH-1Hs destroyed, two UH-1Cs destroyed, two UH-1Hs major damage, seven UH-1H and two UH-1C moderate damage. Member of the 57th AHC close with and killed one NVA. Additionally, B Troop 2/1st Cav had five KIAs. Four enclosures to the history provide even more details. The fi
rst lists the names, ranks, SNs, units, and MOS for the 23 KIAs and WIAs from the 57th AHC and 615th TC Det (which was attached to the 57th). The other three list all the equipment destroyed. Editor's Note: This sudden and sizeable lost of mostly maintenance skills and aircraft had a ripple effect for other units not only within the 52d CAB but also the 17th CAG. For the next few days, units would be asked to transfer and lend maintenance EM, an extremely valuable resource, to the 57th

Do you remember getting an offer to re-up your enlistment with some sort of car, like a hemi Barracuda, Chevelle SS, Mustang, muscle cars in general.

I did purchase a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 which was totalled out in a collision when a guy ran a stop sign. The driver unfortunately died and they had to cut me out fortunately completely unscathed due to my seatbelt.

Last week, I purchased this

A wikipedia article:

The 1st Aviation Brigade traces its origins to the Vietnam War. In April 1965 the U.S. Army Aviation Brigade (Provisional) was activated with the existing 13th, 14th, 52nd, and 145th Aviation Battalions, already in South Vietnam, reporting to it.

In August 1965 it became the 12th Aviation Group, which then doubled in size and was used to form the 1st Aviation Brigade in March 1966.

Dunstan, in Vietnam Choppers writes that the numerous independent aviation companies deployed during the war's early years had become difficult to move between sectors because they had developed 'individual means of operating in conjunction with the formations they supported. Thus the brigade was formed to achieve standardization.

Brigadier General George P. Seneff, the Staff Aviation Officer at Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV), became the brigade commander. Because the requirements varied in each part of Vietnam, the brigade tried to collocate one assault helicopter company with each U.S. brigade and in course of time each Republic of Korea brigade.

The companies supporting Army of the Republic of Vietnam units were located in centralized positions to best provide support. The brigade assigned one combat aviation battalion headquarters in direct support of each infantry division and this battalion headquarters normally worked with that division no matter how many companies might be assigned for a specific mission.

The Brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company was located in Saigon from May 1966 until August 1967. Then the HQ moved to Long Binh where it remained until Long Binh was closed in the early autumn of 1972. The HQ then moved to the MACV compound at Tan Son Nhut, where it stayed until withdrawal.

At this time the 52nd Aviation Battalion supported the 4th Infantry Division in the highlands, the 10th Aviation Battalion supported the brigade of the 101st and the Republic of Korea division, the 11th Combat Aviation Battalion supported the 1st Infantry Division, the 214th—the 9th Division, and the 269th Aviation Battalion—the 25th Division.

The 13th Battalion, which was later to become a full group, remained in the Mekong Delta. Two aviation groups—the 17th and the 12th—supervised the aviation assets in the II and III Corps Tactical Zones respectively. The aviation group commander was also the aviation officer for the U.S. Field Force commander.

During June 1970, the 1st Aviation Brigade reached its largest size, at which point it contained four combat aviation groups, 16 combat aviation battalions, and 83 companies totaling over 4,000 aircraft and 27,000 personnel. The 34th General Support Group (Aviation Maintenance and Supply) was transferred to the control of 1st Aviation Brigade in November 1971 where it continued in operation well into 1972.

On the signing of the cease-fire on 28 January 1973, the Brigade strength had been reduced to 5,000 personnel and 420 aircraft in four combat aviation groups.

The brigade was returned to Fort Rucker, Alabama, on 24 March 1973, and was deactivated on 6 April 1973.
