It is with deep sorrow that the Adams County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Commander Karl Smalley. On the morning of Dec. 8, 2025, deputies responded to a report of a missing person in Watkins. Upon arrival, deputies found Commander Smalley near Box Elder Creek. He was not breathing and was later pronounced deceased. Commander Smalley had just started his day and was on-duty at the time, and his passing is being treated as a line of duty death.

Commander Smalley, 67, honorably served the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for more than 30 years. He is survived by his wife. At the time of his passing, Commander Smalley served as the Commander of District 5, overseeing the Watkins and Strasburg areas. Throughout his distinguished career, he led several key programs, including the Explorer Post, Posse, Reserve Program, and Mobile Field Force, was heavily involved with the Rampart Search and Rescue Team and was a subject matter expert for driving instruction.
