Drug court graduation day always reminds me why I do what I do. Today had me particularly in my feelings because the participants were really vulnerable in putting themselves out there and sharing their stories. I thought I would share a little bit because I feel like everyone needs a little more positivity these days.
One participant mentioned reading “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss to her daughter and how the page about “The Waiting Place” reminds her of how addiction is just a waiting place and now she finally gets to start her new life.
Another participant (that I have gotten to know more than most) performed a song for us. He also shared a lot about his journey. He relapsed after many years of sobriety but now has achieved success in his recovery and has a loving partner and beautiful baby. The thing I noticed and appreciated the most about him along his journey is that he approached every setback with humility, understanding, and patience. We can all learn a lot from him. There were a lot of misty eyes as drug court team members and his friends and family shared how proud they are of him.
All of them told stories of learning more about themselves, achieving success with their jobs, and connecting more closely with their families.
I have been so impressed with so many of my clients for holding strong during COVID. This has not been an easy time for anyone, but it has hit the recovery community super hard. People rely so much on face-to-face connection and accountability during this time and that was stripped away from them. I think they have shown great resilience to find new ways to connect and receive support.
I really believe drug court saves lives so it has truly been a honor to represent these clients and play even a small role in their journey to recovery. I hope to keep learning and growing with them every day.
