Military veterinarians are currently leading the charge to address the CDC’s announcement of the resurgence of the New World screwworm in the Americas. Working across borders, they monitor animal health and prevent an incursion that could impact the entire nation.

“Army veterinary personnel carry out regulatory duties that are absolutely vital,” explains Lt. Col. Melissa Hehr, deputy chief, Veterinary Services Division, DHA-Public Health. “Through enhanced inspections and expert care, they are ensuring the safety of our military working animals and the community at large.”

Happy Veterans Day!

Veterans Day, observed on November 11th, is a time to honor all American veterans for their service, patriotism, and willingness to sacrifice for the common good.

It originated as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I fighting on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. It was officially renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor veterans of all U.S. wars.

Leadership Summit for Non-Commissioned Officers and Officers

8 – 9 SEP 2025
Fort Bragg, NC.

The aim of the VRA, Fort Bragg Leadership Summit for Noncommissioned Officers and Officers, was to conduct professional development, synchronize understanding, and build cohesive teams to enhance the entire unit's combat effectiveness.

During the summit, our leaders were able to:

- Strengthening the Officer-NCO Partnership: to create a shared understanding, mutual respect, and a seamless working relationship between these two critical cohorts.

- Synchronizing Vision and Priorities: The Public Health Command Team, Command Sergeant Major Famularcano, and Colonel Schlanser use the summit to clearly communicate the commander's vision, goals, and strategic priorities for the unit. This event ensures every leader, from each rank, is working toward the same objective.

- Fostering a Culture of Learning and Professionalism: By setting aside dedicated time for focused professional development, the Army reinforces the expectation that leadership is a craft that requires continuous learning, self-development, and mentorship.

In essence, the summit is a deliberate effort to build a more cohesive, intelligent, and lethal fighting force by investing in the people who lead and train the Soldiers in their daily duties.

Happy Retirement Command Sergeant Major Rafael Colon-Hernandez!

Congratulations on 33 incredible years of service! As he hangs up his uniform for the last time, we wanted to take a moment to thank him for everything he has given to the Army and to all of us who were lucky enough to serve alongside him.

CSM Colon, was born in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. He joined the Army in 1993. He served in the Army Reserve in Puerto Rico until 1997, and the same year, he joined the Regular Army.

He held numerous leadership and staff positions, including Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Instructor/Writer, First Sergeant, Chief Clinical Sergeant Major, Surgeon Cell Sergeant Major, and Command Sergeant Major of Public Health Command, East.

His deployments, (including Operation Desert Fox and Desert Thunder (1997), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004), and Operation Enduring Freedom (2007-2008, 2009-2010), as well as Hurricane Harvey and Maria support (2017)) were not without their challenges, but he faced them with courage and determination.

His impact on the medical field is immeasurable. The care, compassion, and knowledge he brought to the job every day made a real difference in the lives of Soldiers and their families. Moreover, his mentorship and guidance shaped many into the leaders we are today. His legacy is not just in the number of years he served, but in the countless lives he touched, the Soldiers he cared for, and the leaders he inspired.

Congratulations on a phenomenal career! The Army is better because of your service and we wish you a long, happy, and well deserved retirement.

Enjoy this new chapter, Command Sergeant Major Colon. You've earned every bit of it.

Army Birthday Cake Cutting

Traditionally the oldest Soldier present at a birthday event joins the youngest Soldier present in cutting the cake. The old Soldier represents the customs and traditions of the Army, while the youngest Soldier represents the future of the Army. Our new Soldier, PV2 Lizbeth Hernandez, 68R, Veterinary Branch, Naval Station Norfolk had the honor to cut the cake.

U.S. ARMY'S 250th BIRTHDAY
JUNE 14, 2025

The Veterinary Readiness Activity at Fort Bragg conducted a training day on June 12, 2025, to reflect on the 250th Birthday of the U.S. Army. This event commemorated the Army's ongoing commitment to protect and serve the nation.

The purpose is to educate Soldiers and celebrate and reflect the Army's birthday by raising awareness and promoting the significance of service in the Army.

1. Recognize history by acknowledging the sacrifices made by service members throughout the years to defend the nation.

2. Promote awareness of the Army's role in shaping U.S. history and protecting the country.

3. Inspiring past, current, and future generations by highlighting the Army's legacy and achievements to encourage young Soldiers to continue serving in the military. Reinforce cohesion and morale within the Activity.

The goal is to learn about the Army history , apply lessons learned to the present, and reflect on how the Army has impacted our lives.

MEMORIAL DAY

The U.S. Army observes Memorial Day to honor and remember the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. It originated after the Civil War to commemorate those who lost their lives in it.

This includes the "Flags In" ceremony at each military cemetery, where soldiers place American flags on the graves of fallen service members.

SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS AND PREVENTION MONTH

"STEP FORWARD. Prevent. Report. Advocate."

SAAMP is recognized in April by both Civilian and Military communities. The DoD observes SAAMP by focusing on creating the appropriate environment to eliminate sexual assault and requiring a personal commitment from all services members.
