HAPPY EMS WEEK!!!
Sunday starts the national recognition week of EMS providers across the country. From May 17th to the 23rd please join us in thanking the Men and Women who serve our communities.
I would like to take the time to specifically thank the EMS professionals at this department. What we do here at the FVFD would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of so many people. Firstly, I would like to thank the EMTs and Paramedics who day in and out, change the lives of so many people from simply helping someone off the floor to trying to restart a heart that has stopped. Thank you to our Van Operators who every day make sure our patients with mobility problems are able to get to their much-needed doctors appointments. Thank you to everyone behind the scenes like our Office Staff who help turn the chaos of our day into something that resembles organization. In the year 2025 this team of about 40 people answered the call of service over 6000 times. I cannot begin to thank them enough for their time, skill, and dedication.
In the past we have been asked "What can I do to show my thanks?" So we put together a small list of what you can do for them or even your local department.
1) Very simply leave a thank you note or a message of encouragement on this post.
2) We often get "Thank you" cards to the station and honestly it never gets old. These mean a lot to us, especially on our "bad days".
3) Lets be honest.... nothing says thank you like cookies and sweets!!!
4) Help us by helping yourself by doing the following. Stay safe by wearing your seat-belt, take your medications as prescribed, wear helmets while on bikes and motorcycles, keep your pools secure, and visit your doctor routinely for check ups! The best medicine is prevention!!!
Thank you,
Andrew Melius
FVFD EMS Chief

Winter Storm Public Service Announcement
As reported from multiple sources, including the National Weather Service, we will be experiencing an intense winter storm starting around 10pm Saturday to 1pm Monday. The general consensus from sources is that we will experience at least 12 inches of snow and ice along with powerful winds. Here at the FVFD we are always ready to serve the needs of the community in emergencies but we are asking for your help so you are prepared.

1) The most important thing you can do in this situation is to please stay home if travel can be avoided. Situations like this can cause rapidly worsening conditions at times that you may feel its ok to be on the roads. When the roads are clear of unnecessary travel it also allows plow trucks to have an easier time clearing the roads for us which in turn allows us to get to you safer.

2) If you are in need of last minute supplies or food, please do it before the storm starts. Thankfully with technology we are able to predict these types of storms sooner and with more precision.

3) Be prepared at your home by getting things ready before you need them. Charge your portable batteries and your phone before the storm starts. Try and keep your phone charged at a high percentage before any power loss occurs. Make sure any flashlights are ready to go and have extra batteries ready to go. Make sure you have access to food that doesn't need to be heated up in case of power loss. If using a generator do not operate these inside of your home. Only use approved and appropriate heating sources in your home. In the event of a power loss please close the doors to uninhabited rooms without a water supply (in case of freezing) so you have a smaller area to keep warm.

4) Check on the elderly and our communities most vulnerable members. In case of any power outages please check on them if you can safely do so. Please make sure to not put yourself at risk and if you can do so lend a helping hand.

5) Be careful when attempting to shovel your driveway and sidewalks. Shoveling causes a big strain on the body and if you are not careful or healthy enough, it can cause a cardiac event such as a Heart Attack. Being a part of a non-profit organization I fully appreciate trying to save money, but storms like this, it is sometimes safer to hire someone to help if you can afford to do so.

6) In case of an emergency please remember that it will take us longer to respond to your location due to the weather. We ask that you work with the 911 center in assisting with any care you can help with prior to our arrival. They are great at giving instructions before we arrive. Please understand that in certain situations we may possibly have to wait for a plow or assistance in getting to your location. Thankfully we have a amazing working relationship with our local townships who assist us however they can including getting a plow to us ASAP.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe and watch each others backs!

Our providers want to make sure you’re staying healthy and safe during this upcoming heat wave. Here’s some of the best tips to help you beat the heat!

☀️ Avoid strenuous activity or working in direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.

☀️ Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing.

☀️ Use sunscreen and reapply often!

☀️ If you’re participating in water activities, be sure to appoint a dedicated adult to watch the water at all times. This adult should be sober and free of any distractions like using a cell phone!

☀️ Stay hydrated by drinking lots of WATER! Avoid drinks that contain excess caffeine or alcohol.

☀️ Avoid heavy meals. Eat light, small meals more frequently throughout the day.

☀️ Use cooling devices, find shade and take frequent breaks if you have to work outside.

☀️ Plan ahead and be extra cautious when parking your vehicle. Never leave children or pets inside a hot car, even for a couple minutes!

☀️ Familarize yourself with signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and call 911 early if symptoms of a heat stroke arise!
