'The Wall' on Dickson Street

'The Wall' on Dickson Street "The Wall" is a low retaining wall on West Dickson Street at the intersection of University Ave. and Arkansas Ave.

The Wall is a well-known landmark to Fayetteville hippies of the early 1970s. It was a prime hang-out, right across Dickson Street from the old U-Ark Theatre (closed since the late 1970s) and across Arkansas Avenue from the University of Arkansas campus and the Old Main Lawn. Despite its location next to a church The Wall has seen its share of sinful activities but for the most part it was just a

fun place to go and people-watch. There was a record store where you could listen to a record before you bought it. The U-Ark Bowling Alley had some memorable concerts, including an appearance by Black Oak Arkansas around 1973 that opened more than a few young eyes to the lifestyles of the hip and famous, so to speak. Palace Drug Store was right around the corner, the last of the full-service soda-fountain drug stores in Fayetteville. The University Gulf gas station was a half-block down, a place where you could get your car serviced from top-to-bottom, while you window-shopped the high-priced stones in the windows of Underwood Jewelers. There's a great amount of folklore surrounding the casual interactions that hundreds if not thousands of young people had when they met at "The Wall." It is to the memories -- real or imagined -- that so many of us have of that time and that place, that this page is dedicated.
