Home is where so many goals begin.

Going to work.

Getting children to school.

Managing your health.

Planning for the future.

Spending time with family.

A stable home makes all of these things possible. When someone loses stable housing, it affects much more than where they sleep. It can create challenges that reach every part of daily life.

That's why Homeless Awareness Month is about more than raising awareness of homelessness. It's about understanding how housing stability strengthens individuals, families, and communities, and how all of us can help.

Beginning November 1, we'll be sharing stories, resources, and opportunities to get involved, including our Home Starts Here Community Donation Drive. Whether you donate everyday essentials, make a financial gift, share information, or simply take time to learn more, every action helps build stronger communities. Local organizations can support Home Starts Here by hosting a collection throughout November.

Is your home trying to tell you something? 🏠

Some common problems around the house could be signs that your home may benefit from Weatherization.

You might notice:
🏠 Rooms that are hard to keep warm or cool
💨 Drafts around doors, windows, or floors
💵 Heating or cooling bills that seem unusually high
🌡️ Big temperature differences from one room to another
🔥 A furnace or water heater that seems to run constantly

Weatherization starts with an evaluation of your home to identify ways to improve energy efficiency, comfort, and safety. Depending on what your home needs, services may include insulation, air sealing, ventilation improvements, heating system work, and other energy-saving measures.

Weatherization is available at no cost to qualifying households in Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Midland, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, and Saginaw Counties.

We started September with a simple message: Head Start is more than preschool.

Over the past month, we've shared some of what that means.

Head Start Preschool helps children build skills for kindergarten, and enrollment doesn't end when the school year begins.

Early Head Start brings Head Start support to families even earlier, beginning during pregnancy and continuing through a child's first three years.

Head Start recognizes parents and caregivers as their child's first and most important teachers.

And families have a team ready to work alongside them with goals, resources, child development, transitions, and the things that matter to their family.

Head Start supports children. Head Start supports families. And when families have the support they need to thrive, our communities are stronger, too.

And we're not finished telling the story!

October is Head Start Awareness Month, and we'll be celebrating the families, staff, experiences, and more that show what Head Start means in our communities. 💙

What does Early Head Start look like for a family? For Tiffany, it has meant growth for her children, resources for her family, and a trusted educator by their side. 💙

When we asked why her family has stayed enrolled in Early Head Start, Tiffany told us:
“For the growth and resources for our kids and family.”

She describes Early Head Start as providing “Pre-Head Start skills for children and family services,” and one relationship has been especially meaningful:

“We've had a great experience with Sara, our Home Based Educator! She's been amazing!”

Those pieces all work together. During a child's earliest years, Early Head Start helps families support their child's learning and development while also connecting parents and caregivers with resources, family support, and an educator who gets to know them along the way.

A safer home can help prevent falls. 🏠

During Falls Prevention Awareness Week, we're highlighting Home Ramp Up, which helps eligible homeowners age 62 and older make safety and accessibility improvements at home.

Depending on your needs, improvements may include:
✓ Ramps or safer steps
✓ Grab bars and handrails
✓ Bathroom safety updates
✓ Other changes that make your home safer and easier to navigate

Home Ramp Up starts with an Occupational Therapist who looks at your individual needs and recommends modifications that may help.
