FARWELL MILLS, 1876-2003

In 1876, George Hitchcock opened his grist and flouring mill on the mill pond in Farwell. It has been said it was the first mill constructed north of Jackson, Michigan.

While we can’t verify that, according to “Images of America: FARWELL” by Angela Kellogg and Nick Loomis, the mill “was sturdily built of local hemlock and pine and held together with wooden pegs. People from all over the area utilized the mill and it helped transition the area to agriculture from lumbering.”

German immigrant Fred Siegle purchased the mill in 1927 and operated the mill for decades. Duane and Laurie Warner purchased the site in 2001 and began to repair the turbines and refurbish the buildings. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire on July 3, 2003.
