Last night, students from the University of Tennessee presented their findings of a micro tree inventory, which they conducted at two Farragut parks: Founders Park and McFee Park. They summarized their findings on the health and diversity of trees in those parks and made recommendations on how to better maintain the trees. Special thanks to the students (Andrew Schneider, Brandon Porch, and Samuel Peyton) as well as the professionals who provided them with technical assistance throughout the project.

An eight-legged friend was caught investigating the new tool storage box at the Farragut Outdoor Classroom. The tool box will store tools needed for projects at the Outdoor Classroom, and was funded through a community garden grant, which the Town's sustainability and stormwater programs received from the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association.

Are chickens allowed in Farragut? YES, but it's dependent on two factors: the zoning district in which you live and the acreage of your property. The following three zoning districts and minimum lot sizes allow for poultry to be kept on the property.

Zoning District: Minimum Lot Size:
Agricultural (A) 5 acres
Rural Single-Family Residential (R-1) 1 acre
Rural Single-Family Acre Residential (R-1-S-A) 1 acre

Area regulations within the Farragut Zoning Ordinance that are also applicable to agricultural uses and building permits may be required. To determine the zoning district in which you live, contact the Community Development Department at 966-7057 or view the Zoning Map on our website at townoffarragut.org/zoningmap.

In recent years, household LED bulbs have come with a steep up-front cost as compared to both incandescent and CFL technologies. Recently, LED bulb prices have dropped drastically, and the energy savings that come with them are significant. Check out this infographic to learn just how much money can be saved by switching your household bulbs to LED.

This infographic was inspired by a grant recently awarded to the Farragut Office of Sustainability by the Walmart Community Foundation. The grant will be used to hold a light bulb exchange event in which residents can obtain a new LED light bulb by turning in inefficient, incandescent bulbs. The date and details of the program will be announced in the near future.

The Town of Farragut is now providing single-stream recycling bins at McFee Park for park goer use. These bins are not intended for residential recycling purposes. While visiting the park, these blue, clearly-marked cans provide an easy way to recycle appropriate materials instead of throwing them in the waste can. For more information regarding public space recycling, visit the Town's Office of Sustainability program page.

The Town of Farragut will be utilizing more solar energy at one of its parks. In an effort to properly light the American flag at Anchor Park, the Town will be installing a solar-powered LED spot light on the flag pole. It's not big, but it prevents the Town from incurring costs associated with physically moving the pole close to a source of electricity. It also enables the Town to utilize our natural resources while saving money on electric bills. Pictures to come once the new light is installed.
