Once again, Farmville Pride will be awarding THREE separate $300 Scholastic Mini-Grants to LGBTQ+ students living in or attending school in the Farmville and surrounding areas! This includes Prince Edward, Cumberland, Buckingham, Amelia, Nottoway, Charlotte, Appomattox, and Lunenburg!💰💰💰

Who is eligible to receive these mini-grants?

Farmville Pride will choose one local LGBTQ+ student attending any school as a recipient of $300.

Additionally, one LGBTQ+ student from Longwood University AND one LGBTQ+ student from Hampden-Sydney College will be chosen as recipients and awarded $300 each.

Will students have to “out” themselves?

Absolutely not! These mini-grants are first and foremost about helping local LGBTQ+ students. Although Farmville Pride would love to celebrate your achievements with you through our social media, if you prefer to keep your name confidential, simply check the appropriate box at the end of our application.

When is the deadline?

Applications will be accepted from July 15, 2023 through August 1st, 2023. All mailed applications must be postmarked by August 1st, 2023. Three recipients will be chosen and notified by August 15th, 2023.

Special Note:

The Virginia Rural Health Association has generously offered to award a 1-year complementary student membership to a limited number of mini-grant applicants if they are pursuing a degree for a health related profession.

Qualifying applicants will be eligible for this additional award regardless of who is selected as a mini-grant recipient.

Today, Wednesday, April 5, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies will host “Sexual Assault on College Campuses: The Voices of Victims.”



Join Dr. Dorothy Suskind (Assistant Professor, Education) and her students, Kayli Glauner and Gretchen Yoder, as they discuss their research project focusing on the survivors of sexual assault on Longwood and Hampden-Sydney's college campuses. This project was inspired by their CTZN 410 course and promises to be powerful.



The talk will take place from 3:00-3:50pm in Upchurch 300. Please note we are back to our normal time for Wednesdays with Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April), we have a pair of talks coming up the next two Wednesdays.



Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 29, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies will host a special talk on “Virginia’s Response to Sexual Assault in the Commonwealth.”



Join members from the Virginia State Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Forensic Science as they discuss the PERK (Physical Evidence Recovery Kit) tracking system and the state’s initiatives on sexual awareness and tracking.



The talk will take place from 4:00-5:30pm in Upchurch 300. Please note the special time.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies will be hosting a talk on Thursday, March 23 starting at 4pm in Allen 101. There will also be a food reception starting at 3:30pm.

Rene Rodgers and Toni Doman from the Birthplace of Country Music in Bristol, Virginia will be give a talk entitled “I’ve Endured: Exploring the Story of Women in Old-Time Music” to coincide with the opening of a special exhibit that opens that day. Their talk will focus on creating the exhibit, sharing some stories of the interesting women featured, and how they use programming and other resources to expand beyond the physical exhibit.

An excellent opportunity is available for potential WGST electives credit that includes a stipend and direct work in the WGST field.

The Farmville PRIDE community group is seeking a student intern
to assist in public engagement. The internship will provide significant professional experience and expand your postgraduate portfolio. Please read all below details and note the deadline to apply for this internship is January 10. You can also earn 3 credits towards your WGST electives for completing this internship! Internship Overview: The intern would work directly with the Farmville PRIDE executive advisory board during the spring semester, with an expected number of contact hours of 10 hours per week (over 15 weeks) starting in January 2023. Some work will be remote, though there are expectations to attend all Farmville PRIDE events in person during the semester, including monthly gatherings, executive board meetings, and special events. This includes one Pride gathering (3rd Saturday of every month), 1 executive board meeting each month, and 1-2 special events. Supervisory and planning meetings will also be held via Zoom or in person with the Farmville PRIDE board and subcommittees related to that week’s specific tasks. These meetings are included in the weekly hours. The rest of the hours will be made through engaging in social media, website, and community outreach.

This is a paid internship ($1,650 stipend) and the intern will be featured on the Farmville PRIDE website.

The Farmville PRIDE summer intern has the following objectives:

Event planning for the monthly gatherings, fundraising, and special events
Creating at least five social media posts per week across multiple platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter)
Creating a potential YouTube channel and video series surrounding the group’s mission
Collaborating with fundraising initiatives
Meeting with the intern
supervisor (Farmville PRIDE president, Dove Standley) weekly (this can be done via Zoom)

​Specific tasks for the intern:
Collaborate with the Fundraising/Grants subcommittee to develop and fulfill the Summer BBQ Fundraising event
Collaborate with the Social Media and Events subcommittee on developing social media content and maintaining an active, positive social media presence
Collaborate with the executive board to develop a potential YouTube series
Take lead on website development, both with content and maintenance
Attend monthly executive board meetings in person and contribute to conversation and ideas on the agenda items
Attend the monthly gatherings (midweek AND regular monthly gathering)
Collaborate on event planning a film series for the fall 2023

Qualifications: The successful internship applicant will be able to demonstrate the following:
​Exhibit the ability to work respectfully and with empathy with marginalized and stigmatized groups. No direct identification with the q***r community is required, but the intern​
Proficiency in social media posts (e.g., Instagram, Twitter, Facebook). Please submit links to example posts related to public relations and branding.
Moderate understanding of promotional writing, particularly social media promotional content and grant proposals
Must be able to meet in person in Farmville several times a month
Must exhibit empathy and care for privacy and security of the q***r community​

Preference will be given (but is not required to apply) to candidates who:
Previous experience in social justice work
Video Production and Editing. Please submit links to examples of your work.
Basic to moderate digital media production skills, particularly related to DSLR recording devices (which will be provided)​
Website design. Please submit links to examples of your work.
