Congrats to the Section XI athletes who captured New York State and Federation Championships this season, representing Long Island with excellence, determination, and championship performances!

Sayville High School senior catcher Shane Meehan has earned the highest honor in Suffolk County baseball, being selected as the recipient of the 58th Annual Carl Yastrzemski Award, presented annually to the county’s top player as voted on by Suffolk’s varsity baseball coaches.

Meehan becomes the first player in Sayville baseball history to receive the prestigious award, capping off a remarkable high school career that helped elevate the Golden Flashes to new heights.

A cornerstone of Sayville’s success this spring, Meehan led the Golden Flashes to a Suffolk League VI championship and an 18-6 overall record. At the plate, he posted a stellar .486 batting average and .557 on-base percentage while collecting four doubles, four home runs and 25 RBIs.

Congratulations to Shoreham Wading River sophomore, Frankie Valenti, for an incredible performance at the NYSPHSAA State Championships!

Frankie placed 3rd in New York State for Class B in the Pentathlon, battling through five grueling events to capture a spot on the state podium.

Frankie put up a phenomenal final score of 2,962 points— Frank placed first overall in the hurdles and a PR in the 1500 breaking five minutes.

Frankie’s success is lifted up every step of the way by his parents, his coaches, and the fantastic track and field community. Frankie celebrating his state podium finish alongside legendary Section XI official Kenny Knappe, representing some of the very best officials in the state!

A new symbol of school pride now stands proudly at Walt Whitman High School's Wildcat Stadium.

The recently installed Wildcat statue serves as a powerful tribute to the generations of students, athletes, educators and community members who have helped shape the school's legacy. Positioned prominently at the stadium entrance, the statue reflects the spirit, determination and excellence that have defined the Wildcat community for decades.

As the plaque beneath the statue reads, it is "a tribute to the countless individuals who have pushed boundaries, broken records, and faced challenges laid before them. Its presence serves as a reminder that the fierce heart of a Wildcat lives on in every graduate."

The project was made possible through the generosity and support of dedicated donors who recognized the importance of creating a lasting symbol for current and future Wildcats. Their contributions helped bring the vision to life and ensured that the tradition and pride associated with the Wildcat name will continue to inspire generations to come.

School officials expressed their gratitude to everyone who supported the effort, noting that the statue represents far more than a mascot. It stands as a reminder of the achievements, resilience and enduring connections shared by all who have walked the halls as Wildcats.

Whether students are competing on the field, performing on stage, excelling in the classroom or pursuing their dreams beyond graduation, the monument serves as a daily reminder of the values and traditions that unite the Wildcat family.

Student-athletes from across Suffolk County came together to celebrate inclusion, sportsmanship, friendship and the joy of competition. The event showcased the true spirit of Unified Sports, bringing athletes, partners, coaches and supporters together for an unforgettable experience.

A special thank you to the Suffolk County PAL and Patchogue-Medford High School for their support and partnership in making this outstanding event possible.
