While fentanyl remains the most prevalent substance in overdose deaths, the number of fentanyl-involved deaths has been trending down.

Designer benzodiazepines have been a concern for overdose deaths for the past few years. There were 42 reported overdose deaths involving designer benzodiazepines in 2025 and cases continue to rise during 2026. Recently, a more potent form of kratom has been involved in two overdose deaths in 2026 and medetomidine was involved in 10 overdose deaths.

When collecting sensitive information in surveys, it is important to 1) provide a safe setting, 2) collect only the information relevant to the survey’s purpose, and 3) share the purpose of collecting the information. These practices respect the participants’ backgrounds and can improve response rates.
