Last week, the DWR captured and banded Canada geese at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area.

Placing a unique band on birds enables biologists to track migration routes, learn how long birds live, and identify the habitats used, and more. The data collected informs management decisions that helps the DWR continue to provide the resources wildlife need to thrive.

Thanks to the help of dozens of volunteers and members of the DWR's Dedicated Hunter Program, the Rookery Pond Trail improvement project is coming along.

Once complete, the upgraded surface will increase accessibility for people with young children in strollers and wagons, as well as individuals using mobility aids such as wheelchairs, rolling walkers, and more.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to work on this important project that will improve the visitor experience for everyone.

Beginning Friday, May 29, the Rookery Pond Trail will be temporarily closed while we resurface the trail. We anticipate the project will take approximately one week to complete. The new compacted surface will improve accessibility for individuals of all abilities and help minimize muddy conditions during wet weather.

If you would like to help with the project, we need some extra hands on Monday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to noon. Please email us at [email protected], and we will send you instructions on how to volunteer.

Nature Walk Meetup is tomorrow at 11 a.m.! 🦆🐦

Join us as we highlight the American Avocet and head out on a guided bird walk through the wetlands. Come learn about local birds, explore nature, and enjoy the outdoors with us!

There is no cost to attend, but we ask participants to bring nonperishable canned food items to donate to the Bountiful Food Pantry. This special opportunity allows you to give back to the community while learning about birds, and it supports local individuals and families in need.

Update: We had hoped to reopen 1325 West this week, but our project is taking longer than planned. We still need to complete the seal coating and allow time for it to set properly. The plan is to reopen the road on June 1. We know the closure has been frustrating, but a new smooth road will be worth the wait!
