COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS

Farmington Emergency Management Director Josh McAtee encourages residents to check on neighbors, friends, family members, and pets. “Make sure everyone has adequate shelter during the extreme cold,” said McAtee. “Residents may also sign up for emergency alerts at www.farmington-mo.gov/smart911 or through the Farmington, MO Citizen Services app.”

The Farmington Public Works Department reminds homeowners to take steps to prevent frozen pipes during the extreme cold, including:

• Leaving a small stream of water running when temperatures stay below freezing for an extended period
• Ensuring manufactured home skirting is secure
• Ensuring your home is properly insulated
• Removing garden hoses from outside faucets
• Knowing how to shut off your home’s water supply
• Contacting a licensed plumber if pipes freeze

Taking these precautions can prevent significant damage and costly repairs. If you experience a water line break, you may contact the City of Farmington Public Works Department at 573-756-0608, or after hours and during holiday office closures at 573-431-3131.
