We all can agree the safety is important - especially in transportation. And how to improve safety is always on the minds of our transportation planners and policy makers!

The FHWA Office of Safety recently introduced nine NEW countermeasures to the Proven Safety Countermeasures initiative (PSCi) that will add to the already diverse set of safety strategies for transportation professionals as part of their efforts to improve safety for all road users in our communities.

FHWA is also hosting a webinar about these new Countermeasures. If you are interested in attending the FREE webinar, use the following link: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=WyTNxPBElUOhqjhI0lj3i1O3D0sDN_JMgUC9aau2YAJUMlcwN0NDNFBUVlBRV0YyRlU2VENKNVVJQi4u

As we work with our city planners and engineers to update our Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture plan, watch out for this addition to the MPO's ITS Architecture!

The City of Farmington will be installing flashing yellow arrow signal indications for left-turns at the intersections of Main Street and Country Club Drive, Main Street and Villa View Drive, and Main Street and Pinon Hills Boulevard.

The project will begin on Oct. 20 and tentatively be completed Nov. 5.

The flashing yellow arrow is a new national standard as adopted by the Federal Highway Administration. The change comes as a result of the successful operation of the signal over the past several years in locations across the United States. A nationwide study demonstrated the signal prevented crashes and provided additional traffic management flexibility.

The flashing yellow arrow for left-turns is part of a four-arrow signal display, which includes:

~Steady red arrow: stop, no loft turns allowed
~Steady yellow arrow: prepare to stop, or prepare to complete your left turn if you are within the intersection
~Flashing yellow arrow: left turns allowed, but you must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians
~Steady green arrow: left turns allowed and protected

Performance measures, including road conditions, play an important role in how MPO's plan for the future of our region's transportation system. These performance measures aid us and our local governments in identifying projects that will be most successful in making our transportation system safer and more accessible to all users!

The American Society of Civil Engineers recently released their 2021 Report Card for America's Infrastructure and overall the road conditions for the entire country received a D. While this is just one organization's review on the condition of our roads, it's still an interesting insight into the condition of our transportation system.

Did you know that data from the census plays a large role in determining how much funding our region receives for improving our transportation system, including repairing bridges, fixing roads, increasing safety, and building more sidewalks or bike lanes?

Today the Census Bureau is releasing the 2020 Census state population counts and while it may be a few more months before the local data we rely on is available, this is an exciting first glance at the 2020 Census results!

The first population counts released today will include population totals for the United States, each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
