Students in the Farmington High School Toddlers and Teens classes recently put their child development knowledge into practice through a hands-on teaching project. The high school learners created, prepared, and delivered educational activities for preschoolers at the Tiger Learning Legacy Center and Meadowview Elementary.

Over the course of three separate visits to each school, the FHS students focused on implementing developmentally appropriate practices. To support the preschool classrooms, the high schoolers coordinated with the classroom teachers, planning their activities around more than 10 different themes to match the weekly curriculum focus.

The project allowed the high schoolers to impact a large group of local youth, reaching approximately 90 preschool students during each round of visits.

Every activity was tied to a specific developmental area, helping the preschoolers build and strengthen skills. The project also highlighted significant personal growth for the high school learners. While many started the first session with understandable nerves, they gained noticeable confidence by the third visit, successfully stepping into leadership roles in the classrooms.

One of the teens shared about their experience:

“My view on being an effective leader has definitely changed through these visits from thinking that effective leaders are supposed be strict to now believing that it’s ok, if not better, to switch things up, especially in the moment, because it’s unrealistic and developmentally inappropriate to think that everything should go one way and that mistakes aren’t allowed, when in reality, it’s the opposite.”

We’re so proud of our learners for their work on this project, and thankful to our staff for fostering opportunities like these!
