This morning a little after 8am, the was dispatched to a smoke in the area of Melville and Main Street. Chief of Department Patrick Tortoso arrived on scene and had a slight smoke condition in the area. Locating the source to a home on Melville Road with smoke coming from the exposure 1 side, a signal 10 working fire was transmitted. Squad 924 was the first due engine on scene and deployed 2 handlines for interior attack. Ladder 926 was the first truck on scene and performed interior searches for potential occupants and located the fire. Chief 9203 & Acting Chief 9204 were on scene and assisted in operations. Interior crews found a fire in the rear of the home on the first floor and basement. Crews extinguished the fire swiftly once located and found the house was not occupied at the time of the fire. A 2nd alarm was transmitted for extra manpower to help with overhauling the home to ensure no hidden pockets of fire were present. We thank our mutual aid departments that assisted on scene or covering our district. Units were on scene for approximately 2.5 hours. The fire is under the investigation of the Nassau County Fire Marshal Office. 📸 Credit:

82 years ago on Tuesday, December 28th 1943 Truck Company Ex-Captain August Ihlenberg went to his last alarm. August drove Ladder 926 for the final time to the scene of a working building fire at the corner of Elizabeth street and South Front street in the Village of Farmingdale. After setting Ladder 926 up for exterior operations, Ex-Captain August suffered a heart attack while on scene. Captain Ihlenberg made the supreme sacrifice that day; he will not be forgotten. May he Rest In Peace.
