Our firefighters had a great time visiting with the children attending the Webb Chapel Church of Christ Summer Program! Participants learned important fire safety lessons, explored Truck 131, and got an up-close look at the tools, equipment, and protective gear firefighters use to serve our community.

These visits help children become familiar with firefighters, understand what to do in an emergency, and learn simple ways to stay safe at home and school. Thank you to Webb Chapel Church of Christ for inviting us to be part of your summer program and for helping us share these important safety messages.

A special thank you to the Truck 131 crew for taking the time to engage with the students, answer questions, and provide an awesome educational experience. Your commitment to community outreach helps make Farmers Branch a safer place for everyone.

We are proud to recognize Firefighter Brett Schonfeld for his role in a successful rescue while serving with his volunteer fire department in Lone Oak, Texas this past weekend.

As our current Paramedic of the Year, and Employee of the Month this is just one more example of Brett’s commitment to serving others.

Great job, Brett we are proud to have you on our team!

Once again, the Farmers Branch Fire Department has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Gold Achievement Award, a recognition of our commitment to providing fast, evidence-based care to people experiencing the most severe forms of heart attacks and strokes, ultimately saving lives.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel can begin treatment immediately upon arrival — up to an hour sooner than if a patient arrives by car. Our EMS team is also trained to deliver critical resuscitation efforts to those whose hearts have stopped. In many cases, patients who arrive by ambulance also receive faster care once at the hospital.

Mission: Lifeline® EMS is a national initiative of the American Heart Association aimed at improving the system of care for high-risk, time-sensitive conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. The program works to remove barriers to timely treatment — from the moment 9-1-1 is called, through EMS transport, hospital care, and discharge. Providing optimal outcomes for heart and stroke patients requires seamless coordination between first responders and healthcare systems.

Did you know that the majority of what the fire service does isn’t fighting fires? It’s actually responding to emergency medical calls.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2021 there were roughly 1.3 million fire-related calls nationwide — compared to more than 26 million medical calls. That’s nearly 20 times more EMS responses than fires.

Because EMS plays such a major role in today’s fire service, the Farmers Branch Fire Department places a strong emphasis on EMS training and preparedness. Every new employee must successfully complete our extensive Field Training Officer (FTO) program, which includes a written protocol exam and a scenario-based “mega code” evaluated by our Medical Director.

Our FTOs are not only highly experienced paramedics with years on the job, but are also required to complete an intensive critical care course.

So, if you ever need to call 9-1-1, rest easy knowing that skilled, experienced paramedics are on the way.

During EMS Week, we want to thank all EMS professionals who train constantly, stay ready, and answer the call — every single time.

During EMS Week, we proudly recognize the dedicated professionals who help make the Farmers Branch Fire Department’s EMS program exceptional.

A special thank you to our Medical Director, Dr. Justin Northeim, EMS Captain Matt Ball, and our outstanding Field Training Officers — Lucas Bagley, Payden Burton, Christian Giacci, Jarrod List, Steven Perez, Brandon Tuberg, Brett Schonfeld, Robert White, and Somchay Xayavongsy — for the leadership, mentorship, training, and medical expertise they bring to FBFD every day.

Their commitment to excellence helps ensure our firefighters and paramedics are prepared to provide the highest level of care to our community. Thank you for investing your time, knowledge, and passion into developing the next generation of EMS professionals and for the difference you make both inside the department and out in the field.
