At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, the Faribault Fire Department, Faribault Police Department, and North Memorial Health Ambulance Service were dispatched to a report of closet on fire at 521 Eighth Street NW in Faribault. The caller stated that everyone is out of the house and there is a lot of smoke.

Upon responders’ arrival, the entire back of the home was on fire.

There were also two cars fully engulfed in flames behind the home. Firefighters attacked the fire from the interior and the exterior of the home simultaneously. The garage behind the home and the houses on both sides of the home were showing signs of heating as the siding was melting. The fire was knocked down, and an extensive overhaul operation began.

Xcel Energy crews removed the downed power line, and the gas to the home was shut off by firefighters. North Ambulance crews assisted the homeowner who sustained some burns to his face but did not want to be transported to the hospital. Firefighters cleared the scene at 1:00 p.m.

The homeowner was at home and outside at the time of the fire and was able to point out the location of the first sign of smoke.

There was no obvious cause, so the State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to assist with the investigation which is on-going.

“This fire defines the volatility of conditions being just right for fire spread,” said Fire Chief Dustin Dienst. “The weather conditions and the construction material enhanced the ability for this fire to grow rapidly. Thankfully there were no major injuries to the homeowner or firefighters.”

Members of the Faribault Police Department and Faribault Fire Department spent a few hours Friday on the Cannon River Reservoir becoming more familiar with its new rescue boat.

Specifically designed to encounter debris-filled waterways that are difficult to navigate, the boat gives Faribault first responders a new rescue mechanism to help serve our community.

The City purchased the boat at a significant discount from the Rice County Sheriff's Office for $6,000 earlier this year with one-time Public Safety Aid dollars granted to cities and counties in 2023. Rice County replaced its boat with a newer, more versatile boat in late 2025.

Adding the rescue boat to the our fleet enhances public safety in Faribault by it being immediately available to City first responders.

At 3:46 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2026, the Faribault Fire Department, Faribault Police Department, and North Memorial Health Ambulance Service were dispatched to a report of a house on fire at 916 Sixth St. NW in Faribault.

The caller stated that the fire is by the front door and they weren’t sure if anyone was in the house.

Prior to responders’ arrival, dispatchers received information that everyone was outside of the home.

Responders were faced with a large amount of fire near the front door. Much of the fire was on the exterior of the home, but the fire did make its way into the attic area through the soffits.

Firefighters made an aggressive offensive attack by entering the home and by gaining access to the attic area from the gable end of the home above the garage roof.

Smoke was cleared using fans and an extensive overhaul operation took place. Hotspots were extinguished and firefighting foam was used to soak down the charred area of the structure.

There were no injuries to the homeowners, firefighters or pets.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 5:36 p.m.

An interview of the homeowner verified the burn patterns witnessed by firefighters that place the seat of the fire near the front door. The cause of the fire was determined to be smoking materials.

“All people in the home escaped unharmed and that is the most important thing,” said Fire Chief Dustin Dienst.
