Memorial Day asks us to slow down to remember the lives given in service and the families who live with that loss every day.

Taking care of your mental health can sometimes feel like a full-time job. Talking with youth about mental health is important, but it's sometimes difficult to know the best way to bring it up. Here are a few tips! 💬

Be genuine. Youth can pick up when you’re uncomfortable or nervous. It’s okay to admit the conversation feels hard and that you’re not sure how to start, but that you want to be able to talk openly about difficult things.

Be okay with silence. Conversations about mental health can take time to process, especially if it’s not something you talk about often. Giving them space to think can help them feel more comfortable sharing.

Ask open-ended questions. Instead of simply asking, “Are you okay?” try asking questions about how they’ve been feeling or if they’ve noticed changes in their mood or stress levels.

Offer other support systems and share resources. Some teens may feel more comfortable talking to a school counselor, therapist, trusted family member, or support group, and that’s okay. What matters most is making sure they feel supported!
