The ND Post Adopt Network is a support system that offers a wide array of services and is completely free to you and your family. One extremely important component of any adoption or guardianship is the support network that families have as their child/ren continues to develop. We are here for you!

Trauma Informed Parenting Tip – Supporting Children in School

Behavior is communication, not defiance.

Before focusing on grades or additional expectations, ask if your child feels safe, supported, and regulated. Kids impacted by trauma may struggle with attention, transitions, trust, or emotional control — and they need connection before correction.

When working with schools:
• Advocate for IEP/504 supports if needed
• Ask for regulation tools (breaks, check-ins, flexible deadlines)
• Focus on triggers and patterns, not punishment
• Push for skill-building over shame
• Help your child have a voice in meetings

And at home? Expect after-school meltdowns. Lower demands. Offer connection first.

Trauma-informed isn’t lowering expectations — it’s meeting nervous systems where they are so kids can actually learn.
