Last night the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety kicked off their Operating Under the Influence Enforcement campaign here in Falmouth.

Law enforcement officers from the Falmouth Police Department, Brunswick, Maine Police Department, South Portland (Maine) Police Department, Scarborough Maine Police Department and the Maine State Police participated in the detail in a concentrated effort to detect impaired drivers. The regional detail was successful and resulted in several arrests.

Impaired driving affects every community. In a Bureau of Highway Safety Fatality Analysis from the years 2019-2023 Maine had 256 impaired driving related fatal crashes. Thirty-five (35%) percent of all fatalities during this time involved an impaired driver. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that every day about 32 people in the United States die in drunk driving crashes- which is one person every 44 minutes. In 2024, 11,904 people died in alcohol impaired driving traffic deaths.

Law enforcement agencies are committed to making our streets safe. Anticipate more statewide high-profile enforcement details this summer and fall.

On May 19, 2026, at 9:37am, the Falmouth Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a dump truck versus an SUV at the intersection of Falmouth Road and Allen Avenue Extension. The crash resulted in injuries to one motorist and required a temporary road closure between the areas of Falls Road and Falmouth Road while Falmouth Police investigated the scene and conducted crash reconstruction services.

In partnership with Falmouth Fire-EMS, and with support from the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, an 83-year-old operator was successfully extricated and transported to a local hospital where she is receiving further evaluation and treatment. The roadway was reopened shortly after 12pm and this investigation is still open and ongoing.

The Falmouth Police Department appreciates the motoring public’s continued patience with disruptions caused by road construction, detours, and closures. We ask all motorists to remain mindful of changing traffic patterns and the presence of roadway workers to ensure the health and safety of all of those on and around our roads.
