The Fredericksburg City Council approved $1 million in funding to advance study, engineering and repair/replacement of the Rappahannock Canal bridges several years ago. This important community priority has been advancing over this past year and is currently in the comprehensive engineering analysis phase โ€“ this work is ongoing.

Near term it has been determined that the ๐—ก๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜† ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ด๐—ฒ, ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜† ๐—”๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜† ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, has deteriorated to a point at which we have determined to ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ it. This closure is out of an abundance of caution. To help maintain access to the Canal Trail during repair/construction, a temporary detour has been established via the Fall Hill Pedestrian Bridge (1,500 feet to the west) near the Fall Hill Avenue and Mary Washington Boulevard traffic circle. Directional signage is being posted to assist trail users.

As this work continues, staff and City consultants will identify options for next steps (repair/reconstruction or replacement) on all four pedestrian canal bridges. The goal is to quickly allocate resources to the most pressing bridge needs. Please be assured that City staff will update the community on this work at least quarterly moving forward. Updates will be posted to the Cityโ€™s website at https://www.fredericksburgva.gov/ and alerts will be sent to the Cityโ€™s Fredericksburg Alert list named โ€œAll Parks and Recsโ€ and โ€œTraffic Alerts.โ€ ๐Ÿ”—https://member.everbridge.net/453003085611679/login/

The City is pleased to move forward with these much-needed upgrades. Additionally, vegetation clearing along the Canal trail is ongoing and lighting enhancements are in process. Lastly, the City of Fredericksburg continues to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a potential project that would lead to dredging, bank stabilization and improvements to the aeration system in the Canal. We are hopeful for an award of federal assistance in the coming year.

This project reflects City Councilโ€™s ongoing commitment to investing in connected communities where neighbors interact regularly with the natural environment through our extensive network of trails and parks.

"Projects like this help ensure our trail network remains accessible, and enjoyable for years to come," said Jenny Casarotti, Director of Parks, Recreation and Events. "We appreciate the community's patience and support as we make these, and other improvements, throughout our Parks."

Hot vehicle deaths ARE preventable.

Each year in the U.S., an average of 38 children lose their lives in hot vehicles. These tragedies can happen quicklyโ€”and they are 100% preventable. Donโ€™t let a moment of distraction become a lifetime of heartbreak.

Remember to A-C-T:

A โ€“ Avoid
Never leave a child alone in a vehicleโ€”not even for a second, not even with the windows cracked. Even on mild days, temperatures inside a car can rise by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. When a childโ€™s internal temperature reaches 107ยฐF, it can be fatal.

C โ€“ Create
Create reminders to help prevent forgetfulness. Place something you need in the back seat next to your child (like your phone, purse, or wallet). This simple habit can prompt you to always check the back seat. When the vehicle is empty, lock the doors and keep keys out of reach of children.

T โ€“ Take
If you ever see a child alone in a vehicle, take action immediatelyโ€”call 9-1-1.

Stay alert. Stay safe. Help protect our children.

What a day at Mottโ€™s Run Reservoir ๐ŸŽฃโ˜€๏ธ

The Kidโ€™s Fishing Derby wrapped up with beautiful weather, big bites, and even bigger smiles all around. Families lined the shore, rods were cast, and plenty of great memories were made as kids enjoyed a fun day on the water together.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who came out and helped make the event a success!

And an extra-special thank you to our amazing sponsorsโ€”this event wouldnโ€™t be possible without your support: Weekend Bassers, Bearing Insurance, Precision Doors & Hardware, Tommy Wallace Electrical, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #4123, Robert B. Payne, and Catfish Kelly's.

Already looking forward to next yearโ€™s derbyโ€”same great place, same great energy, even more fish stories to tell ๐ŸŽฃ
