Great job!! Adding native plants adjacent to vegetables increases pollinator abundance!

Thanks to two interns from Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and Jerrett Johnson for assisting with this wildflower planting at the elementary school in Ecorse, Michigan. This garden will provide an educational opportunity for the students to learn about the power of pollinators and how they are important to their adjacent vegetable garden and our food supply. Have you ever thought “there MUST be a better way to select a restoration site that benefits both wildlife and my urban audience!”? If so, join the UWCP webinar GIS Mapping for Birds and People to learn about a tool created to identify ideal locations for the establishment of urban oases. The tool includes biodiversity and social layers that predict what areas migrating songbirds are most likely to use and what communities are most likely to benefit from access to nature.

Title: GIS Mapping for Birds and People
Date: June 24th 2:00pm Eastern
Speakers: by Carrie Flosom-O'Keefe and Genevieve Nuttall, Audubon Connecticut
Description: With increasing urbanization, and 90% of Connecticut’s population living in urban areas away from natural green spaces, there is an urgent need to re-acquaint communities with nature while creating more sustainable and healthy cities for people and wildlife. We will share our model for bridging the gap – community-based conservation through our Urban Oases and Schoolyard Habitat Programs. As part of our presentation, we will highlight GIS technology we have developed and are using for urban habitat restoration and communication. We will describe our GIS decision support tool used to identify urban communities in greatest need of healthy green spaces, while also addressing the need of restoring high quality habitat for migratory songbirds in urban and suburban areas. Further, we will discuss best practices for engaging your community and stakeholders in your conservation planning process. A background in GIS is not required.

Or, just pop in on Monday.

When planning a Schoolyard Habitat project, most ideas include a lot of plant diversity, but here’s how planting a school garden can mean diversity in a whole different way!

"When we thoughtfully create spaces for educators to connect students to natural history on their campus, we’re fostering stewardship and a curiosity about life science and the natural world."
