The City of Falls Church Police Department would like to highlight the achievements of multiple Department members in the last month.

After 31 years of service, Support Services Division Captain Steve Rau retired on May 29. During his career, Captain Rau was assigned to every division in the police department, but most notably spent 15 years serving as the School Resource Officer for City of Falls Church Public Schools.

At the June 12th Police Swearing In, Awards, and Promotional Ceremony, three new police officers were sworn in ahead of their Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy graduation. Please give Officers Blurton, Fratti, and Saenz a warm welcome when you see them on patrol!

On the same day, two new Emergency Communications Technicians, ECT Evans and ECT Sarmiento, received their Basic Dispatcher Certification.

Recognized for previous promotions were Captain Symoun and Sergeant Morrison.

Lastly, Officer Barry was awarded the Division Commander's Award for his sustained pattern of teamwork, initiative, and dedication to the department's mission, vision, and values, and Sergeant Morrison received the Meritorious Action Award for his off-duty response to an eight-vehicle crash, where he ultimately intervened to stop the violent at-fault driver from continuing their attack on others.

Congratulations to all! 🎉👏

Honoring Juneteenth in The Little City

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that the Emancipation Proclamation had ended slavery—more than two years after it was issued. As the last community to receive the news, their liberation signaled the true end of slavery in the United States. Today, we honor freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

🪰 Spot a Spotted Lanternfly?

They’re invasive — but don’t panic! Healthy trees can survive them, and you can help keep them in check.

What to do:
• Skip sticky traps — they can harm helpful insects and small wildlife
• Remove Tree of Heaven, their favorite host
• Destroy egg masses (scrape into soapy water or alcohol, or smash)
• Squish nymphs and adults when you see them
• Avoid pesticides when possible; if you use one, follow the label carefully
• Report sightings in the free iNaturalist app

Let’s protect our trees and our ecosystem, Little City style.
