Sometimes the most useful part of an assessment is seeing your program from a different perspective.

The EMAP accreditation process gives programs a chance to step back from the day-to-day work of emergency management and take a closer look at what is working, what may need attention and where the program can go next.

Programs can use the process to:

➡️ Identify gaps or areas for improvement
➡️ Better understand their current capabilities
➡️ Prioritize future work

As August and National Emergency Management Awareness Month wrap up, EMAP is highlighting some of the work that goes into evaluating and strengthening emergency management programs.

So, what does EMAP accreditation actually evaluate?

Accreditation looks at the emergency management program as a whole, rather than focusing on one plan, capability or function. The EMAP Emergency Management Standard provides a framework for evaluating areas such as:

➡️ Planning
➡️ Resources
➡️ Training and exercises
➡️ Coordination
➡️ Mitigation, response and recovery
➡️ Continuity

Looking at these areas together gives programs an opportunity to assess their current capabilities, identify areas for improvement and understand how the different parts of their emergency management program work together.

Throughout this final week of National Emergency Management Awareness Month, we’ll take a closer look at different aspects of EMAP accreditation and what the process can mean for emergency management programs.

It is easy to put off documentation when another priority is always competing for your team’s time. You may remember why a policy was changed or how a new process came together today, but that context becomes much harder to piece together months later.

As a best practice, keeping documentation current as your program develops gives you a record of that work and the reasoning behind it. It can also help preserve institutional knowledge when staff or leadership changes and make assessment preparation much less difficult.
