The Story
The Fairport, Painesville & Eastern Railroad was established in 1910 as a short line industrial railroad located between Fairport Harbor, and Austinburg, Ohio. The FP&E operated mainly as a common carrier for the Diamond Alkali and later Diamond Shamrock chemical plant located outside Fairport Harbor in Painesville Township. The line was independent until 1968 when it was devised between the Norfolk & Western and Penn Central Railroads. The line continued to operate under its own name until being completely taken over by the Norfolk & Western Railway in 1984. Today the former lines of the FP&E are operated by the Norfolk and Southern Railway as an industrial line.
