Today, Marion County goes purple.

Today is Overdose Awareness Day, and more than anything, I hope today makes someone stop for just a second and see this differently.

Overdose is not just about addiction. It is about people. It is about families. It is about grief that changes a home forever. It is about a mother who still reaches for her child in her thoughts. A child who grows up missing a parent. A friend who still hears their laugh. A family that would give anything for one more ordinary day.

It is also about the person who is still here. The person struggling. The person in recovery. The person who may be ashamed, scared, tired, or convinced that nobody sees anything in them worth saving.

If you have ever looked at someone struggling with addiction and thought, “They did this to themselves,” I hope today softens that thought just a little.

You do not have to agree with every choice someone has made to care whether they live. You do not have to understand their whole story to treat them like a human being. You do not have to approve of their decisions to be the person who offers compassion, carries Narcan, makes the call, gives the ride, checks in, or says, “I’ll help you when you’re ready.”

And we have to be advocates. More people are becoming addicted every day, and if we want to see change, we have to be willing to help create it. We have to break the stigma, bring this conversation into the light, and stop treating addiction like something that should only be whispered about.

Recovery is possible. People do get better. Families do heal. Lives can change.

But change takes all of us.

Sometimes one person believing there is still hope is enough to help someone believe it too. Sometimes one conversation can change a perspective. Sometimes one act of compassion can be the beginning of someone asking for help.

So today, wear purple. Light something purple. Decorate your business. Put on a ribbon. Paint your nails. Share a photo. Let Marion County see purple everywhere.

But more importantly, let the purple mean something.

Let it mean we remember the people who are gone. We stand with the people who miss them. We support the people fighting to recover. We care about the people who are still struggling. And we are willing to be part of the change!

One pill.

Real danger.

Counterfeit pills can look almost identical to legitimate prescription medications, but what is inside them can be completely different. Some contain illegally manufactured fentanyl, and the person taking that pill may have no idea.

That is what makes this so important to talk about, especially with our kids, teenagers, young adults and the people we love.

A pill offered by a friend, purchased online or obtained anywhere other than a licensed pharmacy may not be what someone thinks it is. You cannot tell what is inside a pill just by looking at it.

This is not about scaring people or judging anyone. It is about having conversations before a family is left wishing they had one more chance to have them.

Talk to your kids. Talk to your friends. Talk to the people you love.

Remind them that one unknown pill simply is not worth their life.

Awareness gives us an opportunity to prevent a tragedy before Narcan or 911 is ever needed. And if an overdose does happen, knowing the signs, having Narcan nearby and acting quickly can still save a life.

Marion County, keep planning your purple for August 31!
Today we’re challenging a few more organizations to join us and GO PURPLE:

What is fentanyl, and why is it so dangerous?

Fentanyl is a powerful opioid that can be prescribed medically, but illegally manufactured fentanyl has also become a major part of the street drug supply. One of the biggest dangers is that people may not even know it is there.

It can be mixed into other drugs or pressed into pills made to look like real prescription medication. Someone may think they know what they are taking, when in reality they have no idea what is actually in it.

That is what makes fentanyl so frightening. Sometimes there is no warning, no second chance to rethink the decision, and no way to tell just by looking.

This is not about judging someone’s choices. It is about understanding the risk, talking about it openly, and making sure people know how quickly an overdose can happen.

Knowledge can save lives. Narcan can save lives. Honest conversations can save lives. And behind every overdose is still a person who matters to someone.

Marion County, keep planning your purple for August 31!
