Help save my family's historic building on Route 66. The Nite Spot Café was opened in 1948 by my grandparents Adam and Anne Galas. They had a very successful business due to Route 66 at the time running past their business. My grandfather passed away in 1978 and my grandmother continued to run it until 1984. My father has owned the building since 1987 with the hopes of restoring it to it's former glory, but recently Fairmont City, Illinois has decided to condemn the building due to the fact they want the property for a library expansion. Although he has shown intent to fix the "potential issues" with the building, they still have proceeded with the condemnation and we have a August 15th court date.
The building is being considered for placement on the Historic Registrar due to the significance it had with Route 66 and also the neon sign which still stands today.
It is also listed in Landmarks Illinois under the 2018 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois.
Their website is www.landmarks.org.
