With the extreme cold weather and high wind advisory for this weekend a few tips to keep pipes from freezing.

Remove garden hoses.

Open Cabinet Doors: Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air from the home to circulate around pipes.

Let faucets drip: Run a slow trickle of water from faucets, especially those located on exterior walls, to prevent freezing.

Maintain Heat: Keep your thermostat set at a consistent temperature (at least 55 degrees) both day and night.

If Pipes Freeze:

Locate the Freeze: If water pressure is low or nothing comes out, a pipe is likely frozen, often near exterior walls.

Thaw Slowly: Use a hair dryer, heat lamp, or hot, damp towels to thaw the pipe. Never use a torch.

Keep Faucet Open: Leave the faucet open while thawing, as this allows water to flow through and helps melt the ice.

Turn Off Water: If a pipe has burst, immediately shut off the main water valve.
