They aren’t fish, and they aren’t reptiles — they’re amphibians! Meet the amazing Axolotl! From their feather-like gills to their incredible ability to regenerate body parts, axolotls are one of the most fascinating relatives of salamanders. Unfortunately, their wild populations are rapidly decreasing. While axolotls can sometimes be found in pet stores, many may have been illegally wild-caught.

One of the best ways to help is by supporting conservation groups working to restore and protect wild axolotl populations and their natural habitats. Our pets and wild animals are near and dear to our hearts. We care for them by feeding them, giving them shelter, and even spoiling them with treats and toys to show how much we love them. Today, one of the biggest gifts we can give animals is standing up for their rights. Take some time today to learn more about animal testing facilities and the brands connected to them, or look into local bills and laws that impact animal welfare in your area. Even small actions — staying informed, sharing resources, or supporting ethical organizations — can make a difference for animals everywhere.

If you ever come across a tiny little creature in need of help, it could be a pinkie! This Wildlife Wednesday, we are going to talk about Pinkies, furless babies. Usually, rehabbers can not take them because most of the time they are too young to feed or need to be tube-fed. With this in mind, here at the Fairlawn Nature Center, we don't take these babies, but sometimes people will, so it is important to know which pinkies are which. The most popular babies found being pinkies are squirrels, mice, and rabbits. Though they can seem to look similar, there are some big differences! Take some time today to look into it, or even just take time to read this diagram! Also, if you have a baby, feel free to look at our pinned diagram to see if we can take it, or please take a look at this list of Ohio Wildlife Rehabbers:https://dam.assets.ohio.gov/image/upload/ohiodnr.gov/documents/wildlife/permits/Ohio%20DOW%20Wildlife%20Rehabilitators.pdf
