Looking for box turtles is one of our favorite adventures this time of year! They’re out and about searching for food, water, shady places to cool off, and mates, and we almost always find a few on our school grounds.

The kids get to gently hold them while we check that they look healthy and learn more about them. We always place each turtle back in the exact spot where we found it because box turtles spend their whole lives within the same small home area! If one ever needs extra help, we’re grateful to have the Orange Beach Wildlife Center as a resource.

These turtle adventures are teaching our kids so much about caring for the land and the animals that call it home. 💚

Did you know that some species of dragonfly can live in the water for over 5 years before they ever get a chance to soar through the sky? Forest school is such a great place to learn because not only do we get to read stories under the shady canopy of the trees but then we get to get messy and touch the little critters we read about!

Discovering something as simple as a snail is so special with our Sprouts group. 🐌 Wait for the giggle when he comes out of his shell—and then, “He’s so prettyful! Can I touch him?” 🥹

🐢 **Our first week of class was a success!**

This week’s box turtle lesson had a lot of different parts, and the kids got to see how science actually works in the real world.

First, we learned about box turtles and the kind of habitat they need. Then we used what we had learned to decide where we thought they might be hanging out and headed out to search.

We found three turtles and documented our findings and locations. One of them was a tiny baby box turtle who clearly wasn’t doing well, so our lesson quickly turned into figuring out what was wrong, who we needed to call, what information they would need from us, and what we should do next.

The kids helped take pictures, document where we found her, find the right wildlife center and phone number, and talk through what we needed to tell them. She is now being cared for at theOrange Beach Wildlife Center and once she is all patched up, we will get to release her right back where we found her. 💚

We also learned how to tell male and female box turtles apart and talked about erosion and the huge role it plays in the Fairhope gully where we were searching.

One little turtle saved, three turtles documented, and a whole lot of hands on learning packed into our first week. 🌿🐢
