September means back to school—and a fresh start for healthy communities!

Last month, the Town of Corte Madera made headlines after moving forward with a proposal to end the sale of to***co and ni****ne products, including ci******es, vapes, and ni****ne pouches.

Local youth also spoke up during public comment about why protecting their generation from to***co and ni****ne matters.

As students head back to school, Corte Madera’s efforts highlight one-way communities near us are exploring policies to create healthier, to***co-free environments for young people.

A new Washington State University (WSU) study has suggested that some of the cannabis products are often packaged as colorful gummies, candies, and snacks that look similar to items found in grocery store aisles.

More than 80% of the 454 teens and young adults who were surveyed stated that cannabis gummy and candy products would appeal to individuals under the age of 21.
We need to continue talking with teens and young adults to understand what they see and how they interpret these products and their marketing.

Ni****ne “Biohacking” Is Still Ni****ne Addiction

In March 2026, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is indicating that it would allow more favored e-cigarette products to receive authorization for sale in the United States. Flavored ni****ne products are known to play a major role in youth va**ng and ni****ne addiction.

Local flavored restrictions in the state of California have been linked to a decline in youth va**ng rates. If ni****ne is rebranded as a wellness product or to increase productivity, it could quickly lead to addiction, especially when flavored products are still available.

Limiting access to flavored ni****ne products, per the research, can help to reduce youth ni****ne use.

Avoid spending too much time during peak UV times (typically 10 am - 4 pm), apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) 15 minutes before going out and reapply every two hours, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and other protective clothing, and don’t forget to hydrate!

World Health Organization (WHO) warns about ni****ne pouch brands

A strong warning has been issued by the WHO over the rapid global expansion of ni****ne pouch products, with these products being aggressively marketed to adolescents and young people. The lack of regulations in many countries is absent or limited, and due to this, youth ni****ne addiction and related health risks are on the rise.

The use of ni****ne pouches is increasing, and the establishment of regulations is struggling to keep pace. We must act now with strong evidence-based safeguards to protect our youth from this product that is now being marketed globally and is worth nearly 7 billion dollars in the United States (US) in 2025.
