Solano County Sheriff's Deputy Hale Humphrey
End of Watch: Friday, March 15, 1963
Please take a moment today to remember Solano County Sheriff's Deputy Hale Humphrey who was killed in the line of duty on Friday, March 15, 1963. Deputy Humphrey was well respected amongst his peers and dedicated to the community in which he served. Deputy Humphrey served proudly with the Solano County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Hale Humphrey was killed when he was struck by a suspect vehicle at a roadblock. The suspect vehicle was being chased by officers after the two occupants robbed a man at a gas station and fled.
Officer Charles Sorenson of the California Highway Patrol was on patrol when he spotted the suspect vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. He gave chase to the vehicle until it crashed, and then began chasing the suspects on foot. One of the suspects shot Officer Sorenson, killing him instantly.
The two suspects then stole Officer Sorenson's cruiser and led officers on a chase onto westbound Highway 12 at speeds of 130 mph. The suspects were finally stopped when they rammed a roadblock, killing Deputy Humphrey. Both suspects were taken into custody and convicted of multiple crimes, including the deaths of Deputy Humphrey and Officer Sorenson.
May Deputy Hale Humphrey always be remembered for his dedication to the community, his heroism, and for the ultimate sacrifice he gave in the performance of his duties as a Solano County Deputy Sheriff. Thank you for taking the time to remember Deputy Humphrey, Officer Sorenson, their loved ones, and all the peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
