On June 14, 1777, the Stars and Stripes was adopted by the Second Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War. Before the Declaration of Independence, each colony had its own flag, but in 1777 the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act which stated:

“Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

In 1949, Congress officially designated June 14 as Flag Day. Today, we reflect on the values and ideals that unite us as a country and proudly display the flag we celebrate.

Happy Flag Day from the Town of Fairfield.

Safer streets for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians happen through design, testing and community engagement. That's the idea behind the new "Quick Build" Demonstration projects in eleven locations throughout Town.

These temporary projects are traffic-calming measures designed to create safer roads for everyone: whether walking, biking, or driving.

Please take a moment to read more about these projects. We encourage you to slow down, take a look, and share your feedback. This email tells you how.

This week, the Department of Public Works installed a number of Quick Build Demonstration projects at cross walks and intersections in Town as part of our ongoing commitment to Complete Streets. "Quick build" projects use cost effective, flexible materials, such as pavement marking, delineator posts, and centerline hardening treatments to quickly implement roadway safety enhancements while allowing us to evaluate their effectiveness.

The new installations include curb extensions, median treatments, and centerline hardening, all designed to calm traffic, improve visibility, and create safer crossings for pedestrians. These treatments help reduce turning speeds, shorten crossing distances, and better define travel lanes, making our streets safer and more predictable for all users.

Locations include:

South Benson Road at Old Post Road
South Benson Road at Riverside Drive
South Benson Road at Judson Street
South Benson Road at “Bend” (opposite Benson Place)

Mill Plain Road at Unquowa Road
Mill Plain Road at Pell Meadow
Mill Plain Road at Riverfield School

Sturges Road at Unquowa Road West
Sturges Road at Old Mill Road
Sturges Road at Bronson Road (opposite Oliver’s Nursey)

Pequot Avenue at Station Street

The purpose of the bollards (poles) is to increase pedestrian safety in the crosswalk by reducing the crossing distance and by not permitting cars to drive around another car that is stopped for pedestrians utilizing the crosswalk.

You can provide feedback on the demonstration projects on the Town website: https://fairfieldct.gov/about_fairfield/complete_streets/contact_us.php

Your comments will be reviewed by the Public Works and Engineering Departments. Public Works and Engineering are not reviewing comments on Facebook, so please take a moment to use the link to the Town website.

Thank you for your important feedback on these projects!

Important information from Fairfield's Department of Public Works:

Road paving operations are completed for the Spring, 2026 season. Crosswalk and centerline striping is taking place on the newly paved roads. Your Fairfield DPW Tree Team is pruning limbs and clearing brush and other natural obstructions to the speed cameras installed near 6 elementary, middle and high schools...

And traffic calming "quick builds" are being installed in various, but not random, locations in town.

All of these projects "popping up" are part of Fairfield's Complete Streets Plan - an ongoing community initiative which began when your own neighbors wanted answers to Fairfield's pedestrian and bicyclist safety, congestion, speeding, and myriad other traffic concerns.

A wealth of information about past, current and future projects is available on the Town of Fairfield website: https://share.google/uiviBtqRRqEimpzA6
